Default Vid card...

I am the owner of a Nvidia GeForce4 Ti 4600, 128 mb, agp 4x. The fact that I bought is three and a half years ago tells me that it is time to get a new video card.

I want to ask you guys, what are the top 5 video cards that you can buy right now? Also, if possible, could you list the estimated prices for these top video cards? I don't know if I should go with Ati or Nvidia. I heard Ati is very good, and that Nvidia is slowly losing their grip on the market, but who knows.

Also here are the specs for the rest of my comp, tell me if I should upgrade any of these too:

Ram = 1 gig

harddrive = 120 gig

Processor = 2.3 gigahertz

Internet Connection speed = 40 kbs download rate (Via AOL DSL), (I know it stinks, if any one could tell me a very fast connestion speed that is NOT cable avaliable in southern cali I would be quite happy)

Thanks for your time,
Ranam

That is still a very nice card and will run GW just fine. If you still feel like upgrading the concensus is that the NVIDIA 6600 is by far the best bang for your buck right now. Don't quote me but I think it is between $150-200. Check newegg.com if you want to order online, they rock!

[Edit to reflect your edit: Your specs look fine! No worries!]

one top card is the nvidia 6800 ultra at maybe 500+ dollars if that is in your price range

best bang for buck is the 6600 GT at around 190-220 dollars

EDIT

the card you have now will do an excellent job as it is by the way

Recently I keep running into a problem with all my games. Every few minutes they just stop playing, they freeze for 10 to 20 seconds. This happens ALOT in guild wars and Half-Life 2. But when I turn all the settings to the very lowest (which makes that games look horrible) the game only encounters these "freezes" once every 10 min or so. I thought it was the vid card so that is why I thought I needed a new one.

Any help would be welcome.

I have a 6800GT overclocked to above 6800 ultra speeds.

Guild wars will *NEVER* use that much, even running at 1600x1200 with everything maxed out its not even attempting to use the full power of that card.

Half-Life 2 on the other hand...

As has been said, 6600GT is the best bang for the buck, i've used a couple of them in comps i've built my friends and the performance is more than adequate.

what drivers are you running? i hear the 61.77s or the 56.72s are good for your card.
