Default installing more ram

when instaling more ram do the chips have to be the same? for example i have a 256 ram chip, will i have to install another 256 or will it be fine if i install my 516 ram chip in the pc

You will be fine with a 512 or whatever you want. Size wont matter unless you are aiming for Dual-channel, which requires two identical chips.
