Default Character sticking?

Hey all. I was playing GW earlier today, and 2 or 3 times during that several hour stretch, my character would "stick" or "freeze" in a certain spot, unable to move, usually in the middle of a battle, for 10-20 seconds or so.

During the freeze, any spells I used would just flash like they were queued and waiting, so I could have like every skill flashing but not be casting anything. Also the monsters didn't move. I could turn my character around, but he wouldn't move out of place, in any direction. Once the lag ended and I was able to move again, everything would go at lightning speed for a few seconds, and I'd get slammed by like 20 enemy attacks.

I know that it was some sort of lag, but I'm trying to figure out if it was my at times crappy Comcast High-Speed lagging out and losing the connection for 10-20 seconds, or if it is the new comp I just bought:
2.0 GHz AMD Athlon 64 3200+
1 GB DDR RAM
ATI Radeon X700 Pro

It runs really great on high settings, no lag(except this sticking once every hour or two) and looks good. This freezing seems like it's the internet lagging out, or maybe GW's server, but I'm not sure. Anyone know how to tell what is causing this?

It's either a comcast or arena net issue not your computer =)

That's what I was hoping.

Also, when I got this new computer I set up a router for this and my old computer. The second computer was turned off, but plugged into the router.

Does anyone know if having my connection go through a router will slow it down, even when only 1 computer is turned on? Is it better to unhook the router and go directly to the modem, or is there a minimal difference going through the extra device?

There is no difference in speed whatsoever heh. Well technically there is but nothing you will ever notice or you could even measure probably.

Routers are a good idea because they have built in firewalls and help keep the bad guys out of your computer. Plugging directly into a cable modem is usually not a good idea even if you only have one computer imho.

Alright, thanks Sarus.

I didn't think that would slow it down too much, but just wanted to make sure since this lag issue came up that didn't happen during the BWE's. Also my internet in general has seemed pretty slow on my new computer(which from the start has been on the router), compared to my old 2.0 GHz Celeron, which didn't make sense to me.

The salesman told me that AMD 64 chips were better for gaming, and P4 chips were better for internet, but I didn't think a Celeron would be faster on the internet than the AMD 64. Maybe it's just been a bad couple days for Comcast, or the new comp just needs time to break itself in, store temp internet files and such.

The salemen had no idea what he was talking about.

Any chip is good for surfing the internet. If all you want to do is surf the internet you can use the chip in a palm pilot

I'm not sure what the current arms race is in regards to whether AMD or Intel is faster now. I used to follow it religiously but have been pretty busy with other things lately. You're computer is plenty fast though so it's not that ... don't worry.

Comcast can have issues pretty often. I'm on comcast as well and it has fits everynow and then.

Computers don't have to break themselves in either hehe. Like I said I'm sure it's just comcast or arenanet servers straining under all the new people.

My roommate who is playing right now was having freeze ups in game as well a while back. Hopefully it'll straighten itself out in the next few days.

Heh. :P

Alright, guess I'll see how it goes. Hopefully Comcast gets it's act together. I just said that 'breaking in' thing because in the past when I've deleted temp internet files it seemed like my favorite pages took longer to load than usual. Maybe not.

Thanks a million for the info, nice to know that I won't have to hook/unhook my router all the time just to get a normal connection, and that the internet is most likely the problem.

the character sticking is not a computer issue, it is soley a server issue. No worries.
