Short form answer: Anti Aliasing is used to get rid of jagged edges when displaying images.

in an easier way to understand it is this
ur screen isn't perfect.....
it cant project or portray straight diagonal lines and such
these are merely squares that are very small
like how if you look at a colored comic book(an older one more often) it looks like solid color but when close, it is merely a large amount of small close together dots
aa(anti-aliasing) makes thes squares smaller and therefor there are a significant amount added
and with the addition of more aa, your comp may go slower but your screen portrays a more crystal clear picture
i myself have aa up to 2x
this means that there are twice as many squares as the default
it goes a little slow at times but i am happy with acceptional image
plus most would agree that most games' default aa isn't very pretty.
i hope that helps lol

I turned by AA up to 4x to see if it would help a while ago, and it went really slow, so I turned it to 3x and then my computer bombed on me. A blue screen came up saying "windows has been shut down to prevent damage blah blah blah" and i had to hold the power button to get it to turn off. it did the same thing with 2x after that so i just turned it off. anyway, GWs graphics are good enough that you don't really need to make them a whole lot better. I'd turn my resolution higher but then everything looks tiny.

making your resolution higher is another way "shortcutting" around aa
i like tiny
i made a high rez
but since its a higher rez it mean the screen is bigger, not the squares and therefore there are more squares
like i said, its a shortcut around aa

I also run at 1024x768 with 2x AA. I love they way it looks. This game is as visually appealing as DOOM3. Asome.

12800 x 980 or something close to that.

Almost high quality, don't think any lags.

I have my aa on 8xS and my refresh is at 60Hz
No flicker and nicely clear for a 21" used monitor.

No, frame rates per second are much different than monitor refresh. I run everything at 75 hz.

If you're getting steady 60FPS with Vsync, it means you're running the game at 60Hz screen refresh rate (unless your card can't handle more than 60FPS). If you've got the in-game refresh rate set to 75Hz, and you're never going above 60FPS with Vsync on, I'd /bug it (assuming your card is capable of sitting at 75FPS).

a possibility is that the monitor glitched to its default 60 setting

i have had that happen several times when i thought i was running 75 and happened to look in passing and it was 60 instead

unless that happened there should be some variation

You don't have to use Vsync unless you're using an LCD monitor which refresh rate doesn't synch very well and does "ghosting" on you.

What anti-aliasing does is to gray out the half-pixels in the middle of the full pixels that are making this diagonal line look jaggy.

So in layman's terms, anti-aliasing removes jaggies from what you see in your game.

But, if you don't have a very good video card (which means, Geforce 4 MX or Ti, or Radeon 9200-9500), I wouldn't recommend you to enable it in today's games. It will only make your single-digit framerates worse.

Oh sweet jesus,

Look guys, alasing is dinfed as a digital signal that is missrepresented... your lines or jaggies you see are being sent as a perfect diagonal but as many have stated are being missrepresented due to pixels.... Now Anti Alising mutisamples the images and fades the image acorss the edges of objects. In a way it does fade the full pixel..... but more acuuratly it renders the immage 2x or 4x or 8x in order to figure the proper fade... hence the performace loss. First, AA DOSNT ADD PIXELS OR MAKE YOUR PIXELS SMALLER only Resolution does this.

As for Vsyc no that is NOT ghoast ither... ghoasting is the LCD monitor inability to fade from full on WHITE to full off BLACK you see the LAG in the fade of the pixel of the LCD being on or off... Vsyce stops sheering... or missallignments in the image scanning... it Syncs your HORT refresh in a sense with the vert... has nothing what so ever to do with LCDs...

I do not mean to be the the know it all ass... but i dont want people worrying to changin settings over faulty advice.
