Don't get an AGP based motherboard and video card combination. You'll want to get PCIx in this day and age. The 6600GT is a great card, I'm running 1G RAM, 6600GT, Athlon64 3000+: GW @[email protected]

Having said that, you do NOT need to buy a whole new computer. You need more RAM and a new video card. Just make sure you have an AGP slot in your current rig and then pick up the 6600GT AGP version (higher end) or the 6600 or 9550 (lower end). Your current machine will do just fine. You can get by with just spending 200 bucks, easily.

AGP is fine if it's a good card. However, if you're going to blow the money on a 939 board, go for the gold and have a PCIE. I have AGP and 754 on my future system (if I can ever get it running ;_; ) and I'm satisfied, but 939 deserves PCIE.

6600GT is definitely the best card in that price range. ATI's X700 does not compete too favorably against it.

I'd say if you're going PCIe (you should) then the 6600GT PCIe is a good choice, especially for the price. A faster card will not make a noticeable difference in GW as GW is just not very demanding. 6600GT is a very fine card.

If you want to jump up to a faster card though I'd suggest either a 6800GT or a X800XL. The final decision being based on whether you like Doom3 a lot (Geforce 6 is better at Doom3 by a bit), or like the green team more than the red team

Half Life 2 is slightly faster on ATI cards too..... Really though ATI and NV are so close to each other it really comes down to which name you like better at the pricepoint you want.

GF4Mx - Radeon 7500
GF4 Ti - Radeon 9600/8500
FX cards - 9600+ (Geforce FX is junk. Don't buy one)
6200 - 9600Pro/X600
6600 - 9800NP/9700NP/9600XT
6600GT - maybe X800 NP (non pro)
6800 - X800Pro
6800GT - X800XL (Best Buy has been pricing these in AGP very nicely)
6800 Ultra - X800XT

Your current computer should have an AGP slot since its fairly old.

My personal advice, buy a new computer if you plan on playing any other games aside of GW. What you have right now won't run pretty well any of the newer high graphic / PC intense games out there.

Heres some reading material:
- PCIe Vs AGP (6600 Card)
- Leadtek Card (One I bought, PCIe)
- Benchmarking #1
- Doom Benchmark
- Riddick Benchmark
- HL2 Benchmark

Some nice little stats for people to check out.

Hope that helps out with your card selection.

You should see my benches then.

just my processor breaks 20K in 3dmk01. THAT's a computer.

I stand by the 6600 GT. I love mine, and should I find that Chaintech makes an SLI board, I just happen to have two here...

ok i just bought a ati radeon 9600 agp , 128 mg
My friends convinced me this was best.
Now I think I need to buy ram.
Since I do not know how my system works, I am bringing it in to the shop and the guy said he will install more ram for free (i still have to buy it, just the installation is free).
What type of ram do I need/what should I buy? My friend said something about 512

512 meaning 512mbs of ram. Find out whether your computer runs on sdram or ddr. (open your computer and look on the ram stick)

You mean a 6800 AGP will walk all over 2 6600GT in SLI? I can buy that, but not by a heavy margin. I think SLI is a gimmick. For the same price, you can get a higher end card. "Upgradability" is an option, though *shrug*

Adam, later when more cards are released, SLI will become a major break for games. Sure, right now you can buy a card that is comparable, but later as more PCIe cards are released, they WILL overcome anything else made in the market by a long shot. Just going to take some time for the development. =(

And as to why I didn't buy the 6800? The cost is almost $200 more then I would want to spend on a whole +5 FPS boost. Its a pure waste of money for anyone to buy a PCIe 6800 unless they are looking for something to waste their tax return in.

I personally have a 6600GT, and I did a *lot* of considering as to whether to get a SLI board or not. I decided against it.

Not that 2 6800 Ultra's in SLI doesn't stomp everything else to the ground, but who can afford that? =p And if you're planning on sticking in 2 6600's, you may as well get a 6800U/GT!

At any given time, you're going to have low end, midrange, and high end. For a while, high end cards will be double the cost of 2 midrange cards. But the cost of the high end cards drops more than the midrange, and those high end cards have more staying power than the other versions. You can pick up a regular (not Ultra or GT) 6800 for 230 at Newegg though, atm. Which is comparable to a 6600GT. Now I don't know how these two bench against eachother, even though the 6800 has a 256-bit arch.

I don't quite understand what you mean by that. While it does increase the high end, and provide upgradability (though I'm pretty sure you have to pair like with like [ie you can't pair a 6800 with a 6600]), for your average joe, I don't see it as a "major break". PCI-E will provide better bandwith and hence allow cards to outgrow what AGP currently provides (though obviously have atm), but that doesn't really pretain to SLI.

Adam, what I ment is for future card releases. Since PCI is pretty well the only way to go now video card wise (since as we know AGP is falling behind), any future cards released will always end up being much better then what we currently have.

Too true. They're going to stop making AGP cards before too long, which is why I recommend that people pick up 939 PCI-E motherboards as opposed to AGP based motherboards.

I forget where I read that Intel is going to be making one or two more boards, then moving onto only PCI. I think their last two boards are suppose to be double chip processors... Would be nice as their last AGP boards. =)
