Here are a couple of things to try that REALLY helped my computer. I went from being only able to play for about 3 minutes at a stretch to being able to play indefinitely.

The help I got from Support was this:

Try this: go to Start>Run>type msconfig and click OK. Click on Selective Startup, uncheck Load Startup Items, then go to the Services tab. Click Hide All Microsoft Services then uncheck all the ones you see. Click OK and restart. This will help ensure that no other applications are interfering with the game.

After that, I opened up my computer case and moved the USB hub I had next to my video card so more air could circulate around inside the box. I'm running an nVidia GeForce4 Ti 4200 and apparently it was overheating and causing the black screen crashes as well. By moving the one card away, I was able to get more air to cool the card and kept it from crashing so frequently. I'm waiting on a new fan for my computer to help that problem now, but it's definitely fixed the problems I was having. Good luck!!
