Hi all,
I know this has been asked before, but none of the mentioned solutions has solved my problem. When I try to install Guild Wars only the screen 'Connecting to ArenaNet' appears, but the bar only goes three quarters of the way and then stops. I am sure that the problem lies with my computer because it worked fine with my dad's machine. The tech support guy said the problem was my graphics chip set. I have a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M7405 Notebook with an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 card and Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller. I tried to download the driver that is mentioned in the sticky thread but couldn't find it on the Intel website. With the 4020 version it didn't work at all.

you won't be able to run Guild Wars on that card...it's a 32mb onboard video controller.

It should have not trouble installing the game, tho it just might when you try to run it.
You need to make sure the following ports are open, so it can access to Anet;
TCP: 80, 6112
UDP: 80, 6112

he might want to contact arenanet and check. they may do an 'available video memory' check and freeze up the installation knowing he won't be able to run it. Has anyone else tried installing this game on a machine with a 32mb onboard video card?

I had the exact same problem! What solved it for me is that a firewall was activated on my Norton Security. I changed the Norton firewall to allow the GW program, and the installation worked great. We are really enjoying the game.

I use the Norton firewall too, but I thought I had deactivated it. How do you make it let the program pass? (I know it's a stupid question but I'm pretty desperate by now.)

Ok, I tried again and this time my Norton Intrusion Detection said it blocked an attempted access that looked like a buffer overflow attack. Was that GW, and if so how can I let it pass?

What version of Nortons are you using?

Here's how I permitted my Norton to allow the GW. (The is assuming you have the 2004 Norton Security that I have. Otherwise, you'll have to hunt and peck around Norton to find the GW program.) Go to the Norton Security Center by clicking on the Norton icon on your desktop. You can either do what my kids do (which I don't especially like) which is to simply click the firewall off at the Security Center. (If you are connected to a router, the router acts as a firewall so you will still protected.) Or you can do what I do which is to click on Personal Firewall at the Norton Security Center, go to Configure, go to the Programs tab, scroll down the programs until you see Guild Wars listed, click on the Internet Access next to Guild Wars to Permit All, press OK, close out of the Norton Security Center. Hope it works.

P.S. I just thought that if you are directly connected to a router, the firewall in that could be a problem too! In terms of dealing with firewalls on routers, there are some other threads on that issue. Try the Norton thing first and see if it goes. Good luck.

if his router has built in firewall he'll need to enabled UPnP and forward the GW ports.
