Default Trouble installing

Hey. When I try to install GW, it seems to connect quickly but then it doesn't progress. It remains at "Connecting to Arena Net" and nothing happens further. We can't past this initial stage. Any ideas? I have Verizon DSL and I read the threads about the problems people can have with Verizon, but those issues seem to be about disconnecting after 15 minutes. I can't even connect! Thanks for your help.

If you have Verizon, then i suggest you try the solutions there first, then if you are still having problems, please post your system specs including your router details. Thank you.

It's fixed! Here's what happened: I didn't realize that a firewall was activated on my computer (in my case, through Norton Security). I changed the firewall to allow for the GW program, and installation worked great!

Please can you post exactly what you did so that others who have the same issue can try it out too.

Post your system specs, router details and software details. That would be greatly appreciated by all, as it saves a lot of work on the techies part. Many thanks.

I'm not sure I know all of my system specs (sorry!) but I will give you as much information as I know. I have a home network. My computer that has GW is not directly connected to a router but picks up the signal wirelessly from a router, which is connected to another computer. So, I didn't have router firewall issues. But I did have firewall issues with my 2004 Norton Security, which prevented me from installing the GW software. (It would say "Connecting to Arena Net" and nothing would happen further.) To deal with that firewall issue, I opened up Norton Security Center by clinking on its desktop icon. I clicked on Personal Firewall, clicked on Configure, clicked on the Programs tab, scrolled the programs until I found Guild Wars (which it said was blocked), clicked on the Internet Access next to Guild Wars to Permit All, clicked on OK, closed the Norton window. My kids, though, don't trust that for some reason, and I find them actually clicking on Off in Personal Firewall, which I don't think is a good idea or necessary. Anyway, hope that helps.

P.S. I understand from other threads that the firewall issue pops up again when updates are trying to be accessed. I haven't encountered an update yet, but I will be extra aware of the Norton firewall when dealing with updates.

Permit All is not necessarily a good thing, as it's almost as bad as switching off the the Firewall. If the Firewall is good enough, then there is no need to switch it off.

I would suggest looking for the required Ports to Access GW and add those in to the GW settings in your Firewall instead. It's safer, as you are not opening ports that can be maliciously used while playing GW.

It's trial and error, but totally up to you what and how you do it.

You should find some info in the Stickies in this area regarding Firewall options and settings.

Thanks, I'll check out the firewall options and settings. We were initially just so happy that we were finally able to play!
