Unhappy "GW has detected possible Hardware Malfunction"

: My dxdiag report is at the bottom of this message. :

Hi, I'm just a non-pc husband trying to make his wife happy with a new RPG. PLEASE HELP.

1. I am on a dial-up

2. I have a new pc and I have recently tested my memory with Memtest86 - a diagnostics tool, which showed zero errors. Also, all my winsys diagnostic tools show the memory and processor are passing all inspections. I have not to my knowledge changed ANY settings to the clocking or memory. All is default settings.

3. If I launch the game and just let it sit on the initial login screen, it drops out after no longer than a minute, without my doing anything.

4. I get the following error message:

"Guild Wars detected a possible hardware malfunction. This may be due to a faulty or overheating processor or memory chip. The application will now terminate."

But it looks to me like maybe it's not pinging back fast enough and just gets dumped by their server perhaps?

If you think this might be a good test: I have a T1 connection here at work and I will be able to bring my pc in next Tuesday and connect to the T1 to see if this game problem is due to slow connection speed. ?

Here is what GW Tech Support has said thus far, which seems to support my lag theory, and I will do as they have instructed when I get home, but your input is much appreciated as well. THANKS!
==========================================

Please provide the exact error message as it may help us pin point the cause. In order to better assist you , we will need to test your connection from your computer to our servers. Please perform the following steps:

1. Click on Start->Run, type in command and click Ok.
2. In the black box that comes up, type the following command:
ping 64.154.197.2
3. After it is done, type this command in the same box:
pathping 64.154.197.2

The last command will take awhile to complete, however once it does, we will need to copy all of the information in the black box into a text file. You can do this by following these steps:

1. Click on the C:\ icon at the top left of the window.
2. Select Edit->Select All
3. Click on the C:\ icon at the top left of the window again.
4. Select Edit->Copy

Now open up Notepad by going to Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad, click on the Edit menu and select Paste. This should paste all of the information in the black command box into Notepad. Save this file as gwnetinfo (or something similar) and attach it to your reply.

Regards,
The Guild Wars Support Team

is it only guild wars that is doing this? How about your other programs/games?

Is the system overclocked at all? Latest drivers for motherboard, video card, any sata controllers, sound card? What operating system are you running?

If it's windows xp, then check this out:

start/control panel/administrative options/event viewer

Look for any errors (red X or yellow !) and see if those popped up at the same time as guildwars was running. Check to see if the errors are listed under either system, security or application and report back.

Just for peace of mind, also check and see if the temperature of the processor and/or video card is climbing when guildwars is running and report what temps those are as well

Hope we can help

****Edit*****

just noticed your mobo drivers are from 2003, check via's site and download the latest motherboard drivers and install those instead of using the ones you currently are, this may be causing issues

Double-check whether your system is overclocked (I am, unfortunately, not completely sure how you do this). If you did not purchase your computer from one of the more mainstream places (e.g. Dell, Compaq, etc), it's possible that your vendor overclocked your CPU without your knowledge.

"Overclocking the CPU" involves making your CPU run at a speed greater than what it was originally spec'd to perform. A lot of less-reputable vendors will overclock the CPU in order to give you a faster machine at a lower price to them. Unfortunately, in many cases, you will experience peculiar and odd errors such as what you've described, with no idea as to why it's happening.

A Microsoft technician I know of mentioned that there is a *lot* of overclocking going on out there, and sees a lot of error reports derived from this practice, so if you didn't buy your machine from one of the main vendors, seriously look into this.

Big, big caveat emptor here... if you're uncomfortable with flashing your bios and things like this, get a professional to do this. While I don't think this sort of thing is particularly difficult, read up on the drivers carefully before doing something like this.

I don't want to sound like an alarmist, but you can cause some serious issues with your system if you don't know what you're doing in this area.

My references, if you're wondering, is as a computer programmer for an IT tool that helps IT departments manage computers. I've been an active computer hobbiest since the mid 80's (I'm 38 years old). I've put together my own computer numerous times, and maintain a lot of system at my job, as well as at home. I've done just about everything you'd want to do with a computer. I won't claim to be the best out there at this sort of thing, but I know enough to know you have to be cautious.

Well I am curious as to what diagnostic tools that GW uses so they are going to be the experts so I can only harbor a guess at the error message. 1) memtest doesn't test processor temp or at least I use a different test to test overheating of a processor so I never thought to look and see if memtest checks for overheating so I would look there. Is the inside of PC clean and free of dust. May want to run other diagnotics on HDD to make sure you don't have a bad sector or cluster.

Probably the biggest piece of info that the above poster mentioned is does the PC shut down or turn off like this while running other Apps? Also is this a custom PC built for you or did you buy it off the shelf? Could be that if it was a custom job done by a friend or even a vendor the person building it overclocked the processor or memory.

Generally speaking though when you get dropped you will usually get some type of a message saying so, nothing referring to a hardware issue. But then again there could be a known bug with the software that for whatever reason the lag drop erroneously causes the hardware message to fire off.

This is the only game doing THIS.
I have in the past experienced various problems with Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 and The Sims 2. I seem to have ironed out most of the Sims 2 but think there's a couple of corrupted files... RCT3 is just plain buggy, but I need to update my video card. NOTE: Updating video card previously made RCT3 run better BUT I just downloaded patch last night for LOTR Battle for Middle Earth and the read me file said NOT to upgrade to latest driver! Wife has been play-testing LOTRBFME all day with no crashes. So I guess you choose one game or the other!?
However, I am getting no blue screens or anything like that on anything.

Not overclocked at all.
Win XP sp2.
sata?

Look for any errors (red X or yellow !) and see if those popped up at the same time as guildwars was running. Check to see if the errors are listed under either system, security or application and report back.
I did this. There were NO errors listed.

I don't know how to do this.

I DID download, burn to disk, and install latest MB drivers. I KNOW I did.
Could it be this was their last update??
Getting further confused...
Thanks Again!

Okay -
Reading the last few posts have me concerned.

A. I bought this barebones PC from a vendor.
The memory turned out bad and I replaced it with good stuff, and then tested it.

B. How do I find out if the processor is overclocked?
I'm pretty sure it was correctly marked w/ the right Pentium specs.

C. BUT (and mind you, I am NOT a tekkie guy), when I do just about any function, like moving the mouse - I hear a faint high-pitched kind of squeal come from the pc and it's not the fan. Is this the processor?

Have I been cheated?

I won't claim to be the best out there at this sort of thing, but I know enough to know you have to be cautious.

big note here, I was talking about the mobo drivers, NOT the bios. I wouldn't have anyone go into their bios without careful instruction and knowing at least what they're looking for.

The Via 4 in 1 drivers are what I believe need to be updated

** after reading your posts about what you need to know how to do and what has been happening I'll do some thinking and post back when I'm more awake and less likely to forget a step
