Angry Verizon Dsl Users Must Read!!!!!!! STICKY!! THIS IS IMPORTANT!!

This is something I just dug up, its brand a brand new DIRTY trick verizon DSL has pulled, this IS the cause of the ERR=7 error, its got nothing to do with Guild Wars, or your computers. This effects all users of Verizon DSL in America.

I QUOTE THIS DIRECTLY FROM DSL REPORTS

[connectivity] 15 Minute DCHP Leases Causing Connectivity Problems

In going from the Level-3 system to the wholly-owned Verizon network, Verizon implemented a new MAC authentication policy, coupled with a 15-minute DHCP IP address lease. This seems to be causing connectivity problems for lots of people. I have tried two different modems with built-in NAT routers, a Zoom ADSL-X4 and a Westell 2200. Both crash or lock up every few hours because their DHCP client waits until the very end of the lease (13-15 minutes) before attemting to renew. If the renewal fails, there isn't time for a re-try, and the resulting IP address change causes other problems. I also tried a Gigafast EE400-R broadband router that renews at t/2 (7 or 8 minutes) and it never has a problem with this. Computers that pull their DHCP IP address directly from the WAN seem to be OK.

I'm hoping Verizon will recognize this as a problem and make the necessary policy changes to restore "always on" connectivity.

In plain English, Verizon DSL users will literally suffer vast problems trying to play Guild Wars, every 15 minutes as your IP address expires and renews you stand a very very good chance of being kicked off and theres nothing you can do about it, except complain to Verizon!! Like I plan to do tomorrow.

See for yourself!!

I also have Verizon DSL in New Jersey, and I'm getting disconnected every 15-20 minutes with this err=7. I'm going to check my IP and see if it's getting a new one every time or what. I hope it's not Verizon, because if it is, I'm going back to Optimum Online from Cablevision.

weird, i've only had error 7 once, and that was the time my entire group got d/ced. I've had verizon for over 4 years and never had any trouble. I use the Westell Wirespeed modem and a Linksys BEFRS41.

In the verizon forums on dsl reports theres a huge post on this dhcp lease, its not just affecting people playing Guild Wars, also affecting people playing everything seems worst on people playing on XboX live.

There seems vast amounts of problems and some rude customer service by Verizon, I suggest trying to contact Techical help first, if that fails you're only choice, like mine is to ditch verizon.

Well,

I just came from home testing some of the things I read here and dsl reports.
I have verizon dsl and the same set up as pyro but unlike him I have a lot of problems.
Yesterday it was really bad for me. I couldn't finish Sactum Cay because i was
err=7 the whole time. I dropped out of good groups 3 times. I was embarrased to try again with groups so I was trying with henchies after that.
No luck. I've must dropped more than 10 times before I gave up.

Today I opened a browser to my router to monitor the wan IP. To see if it will
change when I drop out because of the lease thing.
Well I played for 90 minutes with no drop outs. I finished the mission and bonus with just henchies. The Wan IP stayed the same btw.

I'm baffled. I thought i knew what was happening but now I'm not sure. Obviously the problem it's more complex.

I would certainly complain, theres no real Godd reason what so ever to lease an ip for only 15 minutes especially if you are using Mac Authentication. There is nothing you can do what so ever on your side, the Co is cycling your modem every 15 to 20 minutes to lease a new ip out. All you can do is complain.

The reason why this is probably happening is because Verizon implemented a really crappy IP infrastructure. A big business like that should be using a class A address. What I think they are doing is being lazy and not setting up an in-depth IP assignment and routing table for their massive network. They could easily get rid of this problem if they set up their network correctly... (This is an oppinion of someone who has passed the first year of Cisco certification training...and I'm 17 )

Nifty, where did you get your training just out of curiousity ? I wouldn't mind getting cisco level 1 myself. Somewhere local I assume though eh ?

Yes, through my high school. They offered Cisco level 1 and Cisco level 2, which are both full year classes. At the end of Cisco 2, you are supposed to be able to be familiar with it enough to be CCNA Certified. Since I'm finished with the first year, I'm not doing the second because it isn't a priority for me. The curiculem is conveluted and much of it is complete circular logic. They try to dumb it down, but by doing so, they make it harder to understand, if that makes any sense . Unless you have a good knowldge of XML, routing, ACLs, and subnetting, you will be lost unless you have a really good teacher that can explain everything to you. The course is brutal and fast paced.

I have Verizon DSL and I'm having this same problem lately. Err=7 every 15 minutes started happening for me about a week ago and the above explanation makes a heck of a lot of sense for a reason why. A normal DHCP lease is 8 days...EIGHT DAYS!!

WTF is up with this 15 minute crap?!

I've tried everything I've found for correcting this problem before reading this thread. Used Adaware and SpyBot, Forwarded the proper port and set up the router for GW as instructed in a thread from a different Forum (Silverwolf authored a great tutorial on this btw). None of this stuff worked.

I've called Verizon twice about this...once before reading this thread and once after.

The first time they blamed it on GW servers. Myself, not knowing any better, accepted this answer and proceeded to try to do what I could about it on my end before sending a bug report to A.net.

The second time (roughly 15 mins ago) I got some poor kid who didn't know his ass from his elbow about computer tech stuff but me being polite didn't point that out. When confronted with this 15 minute DHCP thing they did not deny it...instead they tried to blame it on the onboard NIC in my Soyo KT400 Dragon Ultra Black Edition mobo (I'm pretty sure the BIOS is up to date but will check that next and flash it if I need to). I fail to see how tried and true NIC's for everyone who has this problem can be the problems source. It's re-goddamn-diculous if you ask me!!

My next step is to test it with a different game (UT2k4) and see if I get dropped every 15 mins. Also need to check out this article at the BBR.

Thanks for this info btw!! I love GW and hope a solution for this queerest of problems emerges soon!!

Default Tried the Verison Tech

I just called Verizon and told them OUR problem. They said that they have nothing to do with it because its the game and not the internet itself. I threw at them everything we had and they bullsh*tted the whole conversation. I know its verizon cuz my other friend has the same problem. My one friend is fine with his cable modem, but us DSL users are stuck feeling pissed off 24/7 until this is resolved. I'm so close to just trying to see what other ISP we can get cuz this sux bigtime. And i really like this game too.

Ok, just tested this with UT2k4 and the same thing happens...every 15 mins (every quarter hour on the hour as far as I can tell, ie. 12:00, 12:15, 12:30, etc all day long although I might be wrong about the timing). I don't understand why they havn't switched back to normal DHCP leasing by now if this has been going on even a few days that is A LOT of very upset gamers from all different games.

But stupid me just signed a 2 year DSL service contract with them..UGH!!!!

As the original poster states - the problem is not within the game, but with Verizon itself (if you have it). I've had VerizonDSL for the past 4-5 years now here in NYC. Unlike some at the DSLReports, we have not been moved to new 71.*.*.* IP blocks, so we don't have to deal with this problem at the moment. On the other hand, we do suffer slow speed in the evening (due to Verizon selling more bandwidth than they could handle), and poor maintenance of their equipment. Because of this I have to deal with my DSL resetting randomly each day. This can happen once, or it can happen up to five times a day where my connection is reset for no reason at all. My DHCP lease is set for one day, but oddly enough I get booted every two to ten hours. My loop distance is 5,200feet (maximum qualification for 3/768 service is around 8,000) so I don't think that's the problem.

I used to call them every other day to complain about the poor quality service that I've been getting for the past year, but after a while I gave up and had no other choice but to accept it because cable prices here are up to three times as much as the DSL's.

I've noticed a very slight increase in reliability today, still get constant err=7s though, the verizon techical help is a joke, I've started the process of looking for another isp now.

Yea, their techs are very stubborn. Each time you call they go through the same procedure of checking cables, modem, computer etc. At this point I usually demand to speak with a level 3 tech or manager, and if they refuse I just hang up and try again.

The thing is that their level 1 tech support aren't in the loop of things about what's going on with their systems, so when someone calls up and tells them that their dhcp is screwed up and is resetting their connection every 15 minutes they don't have a clue what you're talking about. All they have is a paper with a set of instructions on how to troubleshoot you through a few problems. If that doesn't help they suggest that you open a trouble ticket for their technician to look into. At this point you can request that they transfer you to their manager or a level 3 technician. You might or might not get lucky because they don't always transfer you.

I had to request support once from them, and in the end they downgraded my speed from 3/768 to 1.5/384 saying that I was too far away from their servers (they required 8,000 feet, and I am at 5,200), so I had to spend two days getting a new one year contract for the same plan I had before, because for some unknown reason their system showed that I was never on a 3/768 plan, even though there was a note from their tech that I was "downgraded."

Well, 3 L1 Techs later I still get these problems and even though there are people from all over the country with VerizonDSL complaining about it they have yet to do anything...

Unfortunately I can't play GW until this connectivity issue is resolved one way or another...in fact I can't play any online game without fear of being disconnected whenever Verizon says I should.

My DSL service was pretty stable through Verizon for the past 3 years. I've played all types of online games, hosted an NWN server for weeks at a time with no interruption and played GW for hours at a time until the last two days or so.

Nothing has changed about my machine in the last two days and there was no GW update I know of that would cause this crap...so the logical answer is Verizons new network/policies are causing the problem.

I'll give them a week to resolve the issue before I start looking for a new ISP and figuring out how to get my money back that I paid for the next years worth of DSL service.
