Seeing as how it's a pre-built system, I very much doubt it.

best you can do with then usually is to use them for salvage and try shifting the parts into a new case.

other best is to take the cd drives, floppy, hard drive, memory ect and ad them to a new case and new board/chip if yer mem is ddr....otherwise, its just the hdd and dries, but it can save a few bob to use the parts....we do upgrades liek that sometimes.

If you're really on a budget, you can't beat the $299 Dell. It will run GW, albeit at low settings. You can subtract the monitor, since you already have one (but since you'd only save $20, it's probably better just taking the monitor and selling it on eBay, for a profit).

If you want to spend a bit more, this will run GW on medium settings very well:

The more cash you spend, the more you'd save by building it yourself (although you won't save much, if anything, below $500). So, if you've got decent computer skills (all you really need to know how to do is install Windows and use a screw; the only major downside is that you don't get a comprehensive warranty), I'd definitely recommend it.

why the hell is everyone telling him he can't upgrade his processor???? you absolutely can upgrade the processor. Find out what Socket the motherboard uses...if it's a dell it's most likely running an intel chip and either socket 370 or 478...i'm leaning towards 370 if the processor is running 578mhz....so go buy a socket 370 compatible processor..pull the heatsink off and lay the new chip down. apply some Arctic Silver(or whatever thermal compound you'd like) and put the heatsink back on.

OR....for 20 bucks you can buy a new heatsink for 8 bucks you can buy some good thermal compound pull the old heatsink...strip the old compound lay down the new compound put the heatsink on and clock the shit out of your 578 chip and run it until it fries.

OR....go to www.cyberpowersystem.com and grab one of their weekly specials...

http://www.cyberpowersystem.com/high...em/sp1.asp?v=d

$485 before you customize it....

pick an option and move forward...I would suggest throwing the computer you have in the trash and purchasing a new one from cyber power systems...or building on yourself...but even building one yourself you won't beat their prices.

If he's got <600mhz, that means PIII or old Celeron. Either way, there's no good upgrade path. I don't think it's worth the cash to spend on overclocking, since he probably doesn't have a video card capable of running it. He may even be stuck with 128MB RAM max, which also is below the minimum system requirements. Unless he somehow is able to obtain liquid helium, no amount of overclocking would give him a playable framerate on a system that doesn't crash after five minutes.

You have to admit. Seeing Old Bessy run like she did in her prime just ONE more time would be an amazing sight. I say overclock that beast.

His computer is very old and very weak. Even if you upgrade the processor to high speeds, the video card is too weak, etc. It's time for a new computer because EVERYTHING needs upgrading. If you are on a budget, go for one of the low end Dells because you can't build one on your own for much cheaper.

The original poster might want to post an estimate of a budget he has to work with so we can figure something out for him.

there's no good upgrade path that YOU can see...but to him a 1ghz processor and a 30 dollar video card would be an upgrade. Don't tell him he CAN'T upgrade it. He shouldn't waste his time but he certainly CAN upgrade it.

btw. they make conversion kits so that a 478 or 479 socket processor will run on a Socket 370 motherboard.
