Man, I guess you either took the A+ or blew something up once.

I have processors that have been running at 1 GHz+ OCs for more than a YEAR, and I use them to serve files. Critical ones, too. Overclocking if done correctly will not hurt anything. Those who kill components either bought weak components or asked for too much too fast, or just plain too much.

My 3000+ is 300 MHz faster than an FX55, which ought to make up for the lower cache. With proper chipset cooling it'll break 3 GHz. I've done similar things to a slew of Athlon XPs and P4s. The only time I ever hurt something was one when a pump was accidentally unplugged and a set of DFI boards when the Socket As had a severe cold boot issue. Overclocking wise I've never damaged anything. I'd check myself before making inflammatory and uneducated statements such as those.

And for the love of cheese, I've never killed ANYTHING due to static, and I've tried real hard. Assembling computers on carpet, shuffling as I did so, to see if it was as easy as they said, and never done it.

Pharoke, Ceramique is often the best bet for video card GPUs cause it's nonconductive, so you don't have to worry bout bridging resistors. I'm probably gonna thermal epoxy my ramsinks, and I'm working on case airflow right now so I can push further... When you get your water together, IM me and I'll help you tune her up PAST 300.

Too much is never enough.

If you are referring to the Frag Wraith..not yet, i'm not too cozy with the MOBO i got from DW. So the FW must wait. Stack is a new initiative and it's a smaller platform..nice rig, real stable, just not screaming fast.

And for those who don't know, Kayin knows what the crap he's talking about...as far as i know NO ONE pushes a cpu or a gpu like he does.

Cleaned it up from this last night when I dropped in a UV X-Connect. Chipset block is fully modded and awaiting hardware to go in...

A++ , and PC's are so cheap now my time is more valuable than tweaking one is worth. I haven't found a game yet that has overstressed any of my systems, and even the new Alienware I am considering is overkill in itself.

One last point, if you think I was "inflamatory" so be it. Sometimes opinions aren't always the same shade of toast one would like.

Memory specific heatsinks for video cards are sold on line and even at Comp USA. And unless you changed out the paste for real silver oxide, I don't think you accomplished anything. Increasing air circulation in the case, even buying a nibbler and adding a fan to the case itself is much safer than handling your components without a static strap (I hope you use one).

Regarding water cooling, I don't know what cpu you have, but it is always safer in the long run to upgrade your cpu rather than overclock it and stick an overpriced radiator in your system.

The sum is ALWAYS equal to the whole. If GW is playing without incident, why fix it if it ain't broke?
1) I used Artic Silver on the GPU, and the thermal tape on the memory because if you had bothered to look up the Chaintech 6600GT AGP flavor or read a review about one you would see that the heatsink covers them, just not touching them (hence the use of thermal tape).

2) I am currently running 6 case fans, Gigabyte 3D rocket pro CPU cooler and the Ultra X-connect powersupply with 2 fans in it.

3) I currently hold my A+ Cert., MCSE, and many other certs. Have a dedicated workbench in my garage with full anti-static setup, but half the time I do the work on my floor. I also managed a local computer store for a number of years and only saw the effects of static electricity about 3 times.

4) My other system is an Opteron with complete Danger Den water cooling setup and it overclocks quite nicely. If you have read any of my other posts you would know that I have an AMD 64bit 3000+, which if you have done any reading all the A64's are the same chip with limiters flashed to them. There is a nice little program on the net tha allows you to change these settings and give your processor new life. Also, the other reason for water cooling is the quietness of it all. I like to have a silent pc not one that sounds like a jet engine taking off.

Hey Kayin, thanks a lot. I have already started to price and assemble. Just need to save the pennies for the 2gigs of Corsair memory I am planning on getting. Might also go with a new case...kinda tired of staring at the old one. Thinking out the new Lian Li server case with BTX support.

Well done, I am pleased you enjoy tweaking your systems. Possibly I am jaded, but these boxes are appliances to me now, and a plesant way to make a living.

Regarding magazine reviews, I don't bother any longer. Supporting the manufacturers every time they come out with a new, improved, better, super version of last year's technology isn't my idea of money well spent. A short time ago a friend in the advertising industry I had run into stated nothing has changed. The more page space you buy, the more favorable your reviews will be. The gaming world is a perfect example. How many of us have boxes full of dusty pc/video games that were rated 80 or higher, only to be disappointed after we spent our money?

Decent perspective to have.

I personally just do it cause I enjoy it. No better reason, but for a hobby, there's really no more needed...

Hey Phineas, I was actually talking about real reviews. Like from Hardocp.com, Viperlair.com, Gideontech.com, or Guru3d.com. They are like Kayin and me, we do for a hobby cause we enjoy it. I love being able to squeeze that 1 extra Mhz from my CPU or GPU, or I tweak my bios to get that milisecond faster startup. I also do this for a job with the state, but I don't tweak their systems. I design and support network infrastructure and security. I guess I have what you call a "True Love" of pc's. I work with them all day and can't wait to get home and play with mine. I am also attending college to learn more about them. Mostly software related like Novell Netware. I get up every morning and hit 3-6 websites to see the new reiviews and benchmarks cause I want to, but I can also see things from your point of view. Quite a few people I work with don't even own computers cause they are sick and tired of looking at them after 8+ hours working on them.

Quite a few people I work with don't even own computers cause they are sick and tired of looking at them after 8+ hours working on them.

My first real system was an IBM PS1, 4MB HD, 512KB ram. In the early 90's, when I really caught the bug, I remember buying my first "portable", a dual-floppy Toshiba that had the operating system on the floppy, B&W LCD, and a HD I don't remember for $2400. I took it on a plane and was a star, I tell ya. Magic in a box. The first system I bought for my daughter was a HP 486SX in 1994, which eventually became a P90 overdrive with a wopping 64 MB ram, 4MB Diamond video card and an 800MB HD. I threw it away last year because the bios clock finally went bad.

Just like my Musclecar I am currently hoping to remember my youth in, today, computers are the same as the model cars and airplanes of my past. I work on them everyday, and most nights in my shop at home. I only open mine up when something fails, just like the cars we drive today (except the Imports, which are the Musclecars of this era).

I remember once trying to tweak every Hz out of a P200. It actually overclocked to 262 if I remember, but then, after all of my efforts, Intel released the 266PII a couple of months later, and I saw the handwriting on the wall.

I fully understand the satisfaction you get from your efforts, and frankly, I am a bit jealous, but I know tomorrow I'll get a call from one of my clients who are paralized because one of their systems froze up, and they forgot the golden rule of computers;

When in doubt, reboot.

It still upsets me that we are the minority, and most folks don't understand the difference between a toster and a PC. They still think you can bang them and fix them.

I get $95 an hour because they are so forgetful. That makes me happy.

I thought the whole reboot thing was "The Microsoft Magic Fix!!!" So, did we ever fix the overheating issue or just go back and forth with one another?

I've heard of people with small ratings on the 12v rail of their PSU having problems powering the cooler on the AGP versions, but that's about it. That information may or may not be helpful to somebody here.

Darn, now I'm going to go buy one just to test it out for myself. I have a nice micro case with an Antec400 I can try it in.

So, I'm playing Guild Wars and after about 3 hours of play (and as little as two) I start seeing a strange bunch of artifacts and blindingly white "holes" in the scenery. Buildings and trees will appear and hover in locations where they don't belong, hair and even heads disappear and eventually I get an orange and yellow screen with my HUD still visable for a while...I tried taking screenies of the more bizarre stuff (on my other machine or I'd post it now)...When I take a screenie, the earlier issues will temporarily clear up (often with no screen shot of the problem...artifacts are not visible)...After a few minutes, it crashes to 4-bit color until I close the game, assuming the machine doesn't lock up all together. When I reboot, the problem is gone...usually for a few hours. I assume I'm overheating the card (which already has a huge heatsink/fan and 4 case fans). Any other ideas or solutions would be greatly appreciated as it really gets annoying when you're approching Lion's Gate and suddenly go blind!

Stats:

MSI 6600GT with updated drivers and BIOS
MSI KT6 Delta Mobo with updated drivers and BIOS
AMD 3200+
2X Seagate 80GB SATA harddrives in RAID 0
1Gb PC3200 RAM
Cable Connection
Running Windows XP w/SP2
some really pretty blue LEDs in the fans and case...they make it look faster

LED's don't drain much power at all.

Does this happen with other games? If so it still may not be the card overheating.

Have you tryed older drivers?

I would say try running prime95 to rule out other parts of the system first. (it wll need to run for hours and hours)

Oh, you didn't tell me you spilled Coke on the keyboard. What smoke are you talking about? No, hitting the monitor will not make it better. Ok, do you know how to even turn the power off? It is off. It went off when you spilled the Coke on it. That's when you noticed smoke. Ok, we need to get another system out of the cage, can you get an approval from your boss? He says he isn't giving you any more computers? Oh, you are leaving at 5 for good? Bye.

ROFL. That is great. I feel like I have had those days with some people!!!!!! Has anyone checked thier bios settings and compared them to see what might be different? Also, TwinRaven are the case fans in a push pull configuration?

The game causes your computer to rise about 1 degree celsius every min your playing do the math, 100 mins = over 100 degree celsuis which is the boiling point. Your computer shuts down before that happens to protect itself.

How to fix the problem? Well you could do what i did lastnight and open up the CPU and blast a fan twords it. Guess what? I played for a few hours with no crash, infact i left the game the normal way for the first time ever!
