Unhappy Err=7 and Arenanet Tech Support - not impressed!

Okay, so I've been having problems with Err=7 messages lately. I looked it up on the Guild Wars support site and here's what it said:

We're sorry that you are experiencing technical difficulties. For assistance with this issue, please contact our Technical Support team via the Ask A Question tab, and include as much of the following information as possible:
Followed by a list of questions about my connection, computer, etc.

Fair enough. I guess they want to collect more information. I send them this:

I am getting the Err=7 message very often lately. It may coincide with a heavy load being placed on the server (i.e. I have gotten 6 or so in the last hour, but a patch was just released).
Anyway...
I'm using Windows XP SP2. I have the Windows Firewall turned on, with an exception added for Gw.exe just in case.
I connect through 802.11g (with a strong, reliable signal) to a D-Link DI-624 router. My machine is in the DMZ. My ISP is Look Communications (http://www.look.ca/). I am subscribed to their DSL service. As far as I know they do not filter any ports. I checked my router's logfile and it's not redialing or anything - I have an uninterrupted connection.
As I said, it is not a constant problem but when it occurs it tends to happen every 5-10 minutes. It's very annoying!

Now, I thought that was pretty detailed (and it anyone here has any advice I'd appreciate it!) Guess what their reply was?

They mailed me the request for information. The one I posted at the top. Word for word, copy and paste from the support site. Now, they could have said please supply us with more information on your ISP or something and I'd have been more than happy to comply. But this is just lazy!

I love Guild Wars and I really want to buy the expansion. However, if they're not even going to read my support requests I don't have much incentive to keep giving them cash. What's the point of putting down another $50 if they don't even care that I'm getting Err=7 messages?

the same thing happened to me, but i got a response requesting i give them the bios on my system by running a scan. after i did that they pretty much said i was F*d and couldnt play. i rolled back the drivers on my video card and havent had a problem since.

EDIT! actually, did you read the whole body of the email? my answer was burried within brackets in the middle of it.

Thanks for the reply, Sidepocket.

Here's the complete reply from support:

Who is your Internet provider and what type of connection do you have (cable, DSL, dial-up)? Are you connecting through a Router or Hub? If so, are you on a Home, Campus, or Business Network? Are you using a Firewall application? If so which one? Do you use any Internet Security Applications (ISA) such as "Cyber-Sitter," "Net-Nanny," Zone Alarm, McAfee or Norton? Please provide as much relevant information as possible; this will help us to swiftly resolve your issue.

EDIT: I know this is the standard support response when they need more information, but my original message answers everything there. I'm happy to provide Arenanet with more info, but they won't tell me what they want details on.

I had the same problem, went through the same issues with Anet etc etc

**** I deleted gw.exe reinstalled from CD and haven't had an err=7 since. ****

There are a lot of people out there with err=7 issues. This topic should be a sticky!

It seems like it only crops up during a heavy load on the server (i.e. when a patch is released). That being said, I guess I'm probably the only one who's not looking forward to the free summer expansion!

An update to my post above, the error is not fixed. I created a new character and ran it through the early missions. By the time I got to Nolani I was err=7'ing again.

Just a question or 2 I suppose.

Have you tried talking with your isp about your problem ?

Have you checked to make sure you have no spyware, adware, backdoors, viruses,or worms on any connected computer on your network ?

Have you tried a hard wired connection to your router instead of a wireless one ? While you connection may seem stable, even the slightest interference could be enough to disconnect you due to the nature of the thin client used in guild wars.

Have you ensured that no p2p programs are running on any computer ?

Static ip typically only help when they apply to the external connection not the internal one your router leases to you every 3 days or so. The issues of ip address on external connections only seem to apply when the lease time from your isp is substantially low. ie 30 minutes. Just because your ip dosn't change does not mean your modem has not renewed its ip, keep that in mind. I have a dynamic ip on my modem that connects to my isp, yet its ip hasn't changed in almost 1 full year.

Wireless oddities.

Do you have any portable phones or other wireless devices in your home ?

If you do, there is a chance that one or more of those devices have attatched themself to your wireless routers channel. If that is the case strange things can happen. In my example here, when it happens to me, anytime someone picks up the phone or even if hte phone rings I get disconnected. You may try changing the the channel your router operates on. Also in the case of connections make absolutely sure that you have wep or some form of encryption enabled.

Are the right ports open for traffic ?

Guildwars requires that a specific port be able to not only send but recieve information from the internet. Its as simple as port fowarding. Placing an unsecured, ie no software firewall or virus protection, on the DMZ or De-militarized zone of a router is a very bad option. If your system has been protected by a NAT and that alone when you place your computer on the DMZ It opens all ports and traffic flow to that system. Allowing for malicious attacks and viral attacks. You should immediatley remove the system from the dmz if that is the case and run complete scans through and through of the system for anything and everything you can get on a windows system.

this bug certainly happens to be whenever i'm doing something IMPORTANT. as if it just waits for me to do something i care about doing until it gives me the boot.

i'll be sending anet more info once i find some time. and i suggest everyone do the same if they ever encounter this very annoying problem more than you can allow.

a quick question..

before the err=7 happens, do you experience something like...your character just stuck there? cant move? basically its like you lost the connection to the server but you still can see your avatar and move him/her around?
if yes..then the same thing happens to me and it really makes me pissed since I'm a nuker. That problem might make me get in my position a lot later than expected and it might lead to the death of my team members...
so anyone have the solution for this yet?
