Default FPS Choke

Whenever I leave my computer on for a long period of time, I get horrible FPS on all my games I play, which includes CSS and GW.

For example, I'll turn on my computer in the morning, check mail, go to my classes, come back to my dorm, and hop onto Guild Wars. BAM! I get around 40fps, textures [especially terrain] start fading in and out, and everything just seems slow.

I don't think it's a heating issue, for I can simply reset my computer and hop onto GW or CSS with great FPS.

It may have something to do with ReForce, even though I disabled it.

I tried turning off my screen saver, and, for some reason it, it seems to solve the problem.

Any ideas? Could it be my monitor?

I am running a nVidia 6600GT Leadtek Graphics Card on 1GB of RAM and an 2.0Ghz Athlon 64.

Well, if you're sure it might not be a -video card- heating problem, it may be memory problems caused by a background program such as Norton or another virus scanning prog.

Are you sure you have adequate ventilation and/or cooling for your video card? Your specs are way more than enough to run the games.

I wouldn't attribute it to your monitor, but the screensaver is a good description of a background program that runs when you're away. Perhaps it's hogging a lot of memory when you're gone and keeps that memory stored in the cache for some reason.

If turning the screensaver off solves the problem, I'd recommend doing that, and leaving it that way

Ah, the cache! That's it!

I normally keep one window open with about 7 tabs for GWfansites/forums. I looked at my Processes and found that firefox.exe was using over half! I've found that it's worst when I leave open Replies, so I'll remember to submit them before playing any games...
