Depends on your hardware and connection speed, along with how many sentry-apps you're running.

A router/firewall with SPI will also help...

I'm only running a 2.5 ghz P4 w/ 6800Ultra video card and 1 gig or RAM. My system doesn't lag while Running GW, McAfee Antivirus, Spyware Doctor, and ZoneAlarm. However, if I open 3+ IE browsers in the background, I notice momentary video lag.

My connection is a Comcast cable modem with a D-Link DGL-4300 gaming router for extra protection vs. remote intruders. Some script-monkey was originally attempting a sustained port-scan vs. my system, and my connection's performace did take a hit. However, once I upgraded the router to the DLG-4300, ZoneAlarm stopped logging intrusion attempts, and the lag issues vanished.
