The ram that comes with pre built pc's, can they be removed and replaced? I got a 128 or something DDR with my computer then I bought a 512 ddr, I wanted to know if I can take out my 128 for a 512 with no damage or any other problems.

Yes, but you need to make sure that you bought the same kind of DDR as the original because they have different key patterns in their slots. For example, if you had DDR400, you'd need to buy DDR400, not DDR333 because it wouldn't fit in the slot.

Another thing you want to do if you are still going to use the old stick with the new is that you have to make sure it has the same timing on the sticks...otherwise you will be running at the lower speed of the two. If at all possible get the same brand with the same timing.

Make sure you ground yourself though...I have seen the blue spark of death quite a few times working with servers and careless people. Use a static strap.

Yes of course, you only have to check what kind of memory it is, DDR, DDR2, etc. If you are not sure, better unplug the memory and take it to the shop :P

yeah just don't let them install it for you...they will charge you $50 just to stick the dang thing it.

Sorry, but thats not correct, DDR is DDR regardless of speed of ram, so it will fit. Say for example if you had one DDR400 and one DDR333, these will work just fine together, however the DDR400 would lower its speed to match the DDR333. The speed difference will be marginal, so you wont notice it that much.

Also, if your system is an AMD socket 754 or 939 (probably not since your system only came with 128MB) you will probably need the modules to be exactly the same, down to the make/model of the chips used in the module. A few 754 and 939 motherboards have been known to accept modules with differences, but most of them need to be exactly the same.

Disregard this if you're not using an AMD 754 or 939.

Thanks, just to let you know I have done this installing before, just needed to know if the org ram can be replaced, some guy said no so I came here and asked. The installing part I have done many many times before. It's a Kingston 512 ddr PC 3200 that i'm aware of. (I'll have to check) Since I don't have the package anymore for the other one I bought, is there any way of checking? Programs or anything?
