/agree

I've played with 15 year olds that were really cool and mature, and I've played with 28 year olds that screw around and call everybody n00bs when they don't get their way. Age really is a state of mind...

Hehe. I love those. I had a kid assure me one night that I'm a huge loser because I still play games at 30. I said, "Actually, I think that most people do a lot of the same things at 30 as they do at 20...they just know more and have more money, so they do them much better and with more style..."

You guys know AlienWare is a rip off right?
you spend most of your money just for them to put it together.
Only cool thing about alienware is their Chasseys
Other than that the thing is a total rip

lets see...i was kind of lazy to buy a seperate case and mobo and then go through the trouble of the putting all the wires to the right slot and etc so i just got a barebones

my "build"
xpc barebones
P4 w/ HT 3.0ghz OC to 3.6 (xpc ICE cooling technology is so awesome )
1gb kingston
apollo 6800 (unlocked 18 pipelines)
SATA 80gb HD
XP pro
Lite on CD burner

this was my first DYI computer. takes about an hour to set up and only about $500-700.

i encourage everyone to build their own computer. its seriously not that hard and save money.

its funny cause my friends want me to build thier computers now

MIne i recently created this rig about 6 months ago!!!:

1.AMD DUAL CORE 4800
2.3GIGS OCZ MEMORY
3.DUAL 78OOGTX PCI-E
4.DUAL RAPTOR 74GIG RAID 0 10,000RPM
5.DUAL iBM DESKSTARS 1TERA BYTE RAID 1 7200 RPM
6.AUDIGY 2ZS/BREAK OUT BOX
7.WAVE MASTER CASE
8.QUIET COOL 850 SLI PSU
9.4 20MM FANS
10.LIQUID COOLING ALX
11.WIRE MANGEMENT
12.DUAL PLEXTOR P7-A DVD/COMBOS
13.AND 3 23" VIEWSONICS 6MS/800:1 CONTRAST monitors
14.ASUS MOBO SLI

This is my general gaming rig, i play BF2, battlefront 2, Cs.s, quake 4, and a few other online games, i know this is overkill for GW, but dam if they would only support 8x or higher AA, the graphics would be even more insane lets hope the expansion pack will allow for higher details settings for ultra high performance rigs!!!

Oh my rig is completely stock!!! no overclockin needed!!!!

Thanks,
You're lying, of course. Only Matrox Parhelia cards can drive 3 monitors. And no one puts 3 23" LCDs on their desk- it doesn't fit.

You just went down the list and listed all the "best" components.

Not true. You can run up to 4 monitors with 2 of certain nVidia cards (not sure about ATI cards, but probably) if you disable SLi. He listed 2 x 7800GTX cards, so it's entirely possible to run 3 monitors with SLi turned off.

I wonder about the 20mm fans (do you mean 120mm? The Wave Master case uses 80mm fans only...I have one). 20mm fans would be really really tiny!

The 3GB RAM is keeping it from running dual-channel, though. You should go down to 2GB or up to 4GB (assuming you are using 1GB sticks). If you go up to 4GB make sure your mobo will do dual-channel with 4 sticks...some will only do dual channel with 2 sticks.

Just to fully understand....You can get dual channel if he had 2x1Gb sticks and 2x512Mb sticks...correct?

Two same size sticks (pref. same manufacturer & model) that support dual channel. Most do, but there's still modules that won't run in dual channel.

Also some motherboards, and some processors don't support Dual Channel, AMD64 Clawhammer (s754)-series comes to mind.

Currently, and for near future gaming on this rig:

AMD64 3200+ [Clawhammer s754]
1GB A-Data ram [Should be 1.5GB, got the 3rd 512mb module, but Clawhammer memorycontroller = suck]
MSI Neo2 Platinum [Had Gigabyte K8NNXP, but it's powersupply failed, random crashes]
GeForce 6800GT 256MB [Had Radeon 9800Pro, but it died out of the blue]
Hitachi 250GB drives x2 [in RAID 0]
Hitachi 160GB drives x2 [both standalone]
Plextor PX708A DVD multiformat burner [Been to warranty 3 times and counting ]
Creative Live! for sound

All stuffed into Antec Sonata Piano Black case, with two 120mm fans. 480W Enermax PSU [had Fortron supersilent-thingy, but it didn't supply enough power. Running on my supersilent linux server now :P]

Dual-channel is dependent on two things: the RAM modules and the memory controller. Technically, the only requirement of the modules is that they be in pairs (some motherboards will allow 2 pairs) and that the paired modules be nearly identical (make, model, and timings). Mileage varies on people's experiences with getting modules to run dual-channel, and I'm not clear on whether some modules are funny about it or if they're dealing with picky memory controllers.

Other than that, the memory conroller just has to support dual-channel. In the case of Athlon64 the memory controller is on the CPU, so you're looking at only socket 939 and above supporting dual-channel. Socket 754 Athlon64s don't support it. For everything but Athlon64 the memory controller is in the north bridge, making it chipset-dependent. Most new chipsets support dual-channel memory configurations, and there are even some new chipsets for older platforms (like Socket A) that support dual-channel, although I'm yet to see any test results showing that dual-channel is a benefit to Socket A. It may or may not be.

To answer your question, I'm not sure. It seems like different boards show different results with mixing module sizes and types. One of the two Athlon64 boards that I own doesn't like it at all when all installed modules aren't identical. In fact it won't even POST if any modules are too far off from the others. I haven't played around with mixing modules with my other board, so I can't tell you for sure.

Dex,
Ok..thanks. I have Intel chipsets (Dell) and my 2nd computer a Dim 4600 2.8Ghz 800FSB has 2x512Mb (1&3 slots) and 2x256Mb (2&4 slots) I am sure it is running dual channel with them in those slots. My 1st computer Dim 5100 3.4Ghz 800FSB has 4x1Gb and I am pretty darn sure THAT is a dual channel. My 2nd computer has Dell brand ram and my 1st computer has Crucial brand ram. I am pretty sure Crucial and Dell are the same brands(Samsung or micron)....just that Crucial is cheaper in cost then Dell.

I know next to notheing about AMD anymore. They have change allot since I owned a K6 AMD chipset.

Thought I'd put mine up too. I got it over a year ago so it is way out of date now (doin it from memory cuz I am at work)

Intel 3.4 GHz 1MB L2 cache
1 GB Dual channel RAM
2 Seagate 160 GB on a RAID 0 (7200 RPM) + one WD 160 External (also 7200)
Cheap DVD drive
Hitachi 8x Dual Layer DVD+RW/48x (I think) CDRW
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
ATI X300 (sucks crap but was all I could afford after everything else)
Logitech MX 700 wireless mouse
Logitech Wireless Keyboard
Belkin Nostromo Speedpad N52 (got it for christmas but it sucks and I am returning it)

probably forgeting stuff, but it runs GW alright (vid card needs to be updated to something good)

Nothing wrong with your system LouAl. Better then allot of them out there. You can get a decent video card for a few dollars...that and another Gig of ram and you are set for a good while to come.

By the way, Old Dood, there's an application you can download for free called CPU-Z that will tell you for sure if you're memory is running dual-channel. Just google "CPU-Z download" and you'll find several sources.

Yup...nice little program. Mine on this computer (Dim 5100 w/4x1Gb) is definetly dual channel. They all are Micron brand. Everything "seems" normal. I am not a computer geek....so I do not fully understand the "timings" and all that. It even tells the week they were made. I have two of them in the 69th week and two in the 49th week. Pretty spiffy...

I will check my other computer tomorrow. To late for me this evening. Plus my daughter is using it at the moment.
