I have been running GW on a 9800 Pro 128MB 356-bit on Max detail + 4x AA for about 7 months with no issues. Every now and then a manufacturer can have a bad shipment of cards.

ATI 4 LIFE!!!

Probably your card was in ofr it anyway, thats just the way things go. It only takes 1 tiny little connection to go ping, or for it to heat up just that little bit too much, and then its busted.

My card works, but, and i dont know how many other ppl have this problem, sometimes the game isnt rendered properly and i get massive lag when i open the inventory and go into bags etc. I have been told its a issue with some of the older (and crappier, its a Geforce 4000 MX :S) cards and the newer drivers. Anyway, there is a known issue with GW, old GeForce cards, and new drivers. Just thought i would give ya a heads up. ie, dont get old geoforce card, get something decent, and for the love of god, dont get a 4000 MX, cos it sucks.

Actauly it is most likely ATI's fault, DOD:S almost burned out my card. But I was on the latest driver, luckily my computer has all these shutdown-if-overheating features.

So I switched back to the 4.12 drivers, works like a charm.

The new ATI drivers are designed for the newest cards, and for some reason, they become lethal to the older ones. Every new driver I watch for, but 4.12 always has the best performance.

When in doubt, get rid of your ATi card and get a GeForce card. I've never had a problem with my geforce cards. My old ti4200 still works for everything. And my new 6600gt is working beautifully, even severely underpowered.

GF is jsut better

That is a claim not a truth...Depends on people's systems. My ATI X800XL PCIe works perfectly. I also have a Ti4200 in one of my computers and it is a solid but older card. The 6600GT is a good mid range card as well. Most people are having problems with the higher range cards...doesn't matter what brand either.

Had bad experience with my Ti4200. Got so hot (no OC) that the heat sink fell off. Have had 2 ATI cards since with no issues other than it got outdated for games I wanted to play (HL2, BF2, etc.)

Aren't the sinks usually mounted on with plastic studs/metal screws, and for that stuff to melt off they have to get very hot. Or repeated cold<->hot transitions over longer periods of time, makes plastics pretty fragile (Got 2 CPU sinks that have gone boom because of that, plastic parts snapping in two) and that isn't really NVidia/ATi specific, after all, NVidia and ATi only supply the GPU cores, and other manufacturers build the PCBs and other components.

I've been using my ATi 9800 Pro 128mb for longer than this game has been out. And I play this game hours, I have no problem there is nothing wrong with ATi cards. My advice... stop buying bootleg video cards that were made in some back alley in Hong Kong.

Mine was ATI 9800PRO 128mb, and it just died. It sure wasn't a cheapo model, and it cost an arm and a leg when I bought it new.

Not all cards are created equal even if they have the same core, there's different manufacturers for the cards themselves (Giga-Byte, MSI, Creative, Sapphire, XFX, etc etc) that have different revisions and models of the same card. The problem could be in the GPU core, the problem could be in the manufacturing work, the problem could be in how the Moon is locationed in relation to Mars and the phase of the Sun regarding Pluto. Just plain stupid saying 'omgz my card works fine, stop buying bootleg sh*t'...

Ah mine was 100% ATi. Not Asus, MSI or another crap like that. Oh ya Creative no longer make video cards by the way. And dude it was a joke.

I have to agree with almost everyone here that has said the videocard was probably on its way out anyways. My mom had a similar problem with her computer. My brother likes to play a lot of games on it, and one day she booted it up, opened Microsoft Word of all "graphics intensive" programs, and same thing, videocard blew. I believe it was an ati, and after examining the card the problem seemed to be the capacitors. Each one had the top and bottom puffed out, like a miniature firecracker had gone off inside, and they were rusty, like electrolyte had leaked out and corroded the metal. If you're replacing the card, go nVidia. I believe (not entirely sure) that they have a minimum standard for parts being used to make their cards that is slightly higher than that of ATI's. Also, nVidia's drivers are better. Trying to get a decent driver from ATI is like going dumpster diving for a high-end computer. You're just not going to find it.

Xaniera's got a valid point about the ATI drivers. That company has been known to have sub-standard drivers, though they are slightly better in the last few months. Still nowhere near the quality of Nvidia's drivers.
