Default speaker/headphone problem

Calling on those more knowledgeable than me (i.e. almost everyone) for speaker help. I have a cheap set of altec lansing speakers on my computer. I've had them for like 5 years now. I've recently lost my second pair of headphones to the same problem. The left one works fine, but the right becomes very faint. I used both these pairs with my iPod shuffle occasionally, but much more frequently (and almost predominantly around the time of their malfunction) through the output jack from my PC speakers.

Now, about 3 days ago, I orderred a new set of headphones with a mic., so I can make use of Teamspeak. Then, the following day is when the second pair of headphones died (just coincidence on the date). So, I'm wondering if it could be the speakers causing the problem in the headphones. If so, I would like to know how to figure this out for sure, and hopefully how to repair them, before they corrupt my new mic/headset.

Like I said, though, I would like to know how to tell what's gonig on, as I would rather not buy new speakers if they may not be the problem. Other important tidbits include: the speaker output seems balanced fine, as far as I can tell. Also, the headphones are seemingly permenantly damaged, as the right earpiece is barely audible no matter what device or computer jack I run them from.

Thanks in advance for any ideas or suggestions

You should be able to run your headphones directly to the computer without going through the speakers...just unplug the speakers from the green port in back and put your headphones in there.

Yeah, I actually have an extra headphone port in the front of my case. However, with the location of my case (on the floor), both my past headphone sets have not had cords long enough to allow freedom of movement. I think/hope my new ones have a longer cord, which may be an option. Also, I find the volume output of the port directly from the case is really freaking loud. Sure, I can mess with this back and forth, as needed, but coming from the speakers is just a whole lot more convenient.

Just buy an extension for your headphones. They should be at any store such as Wal-mart, Best-Buy, or anything similar.

I do the same, I have extender cable hooked to the pc (on the floor under the desk) and run headphone. I found everything sounds better via head phones and no longer use standard 2 speaker setup.

You could also try wireless headphones.

wireless headphones are good, but gulp batteries sometimes like a depressed teen girl who has just been dumpped shovels in chocolate ^^

also, if you happen (like me) to have a smaller than average head, you can find it hard to keep them on said head.

tupper, if your in the uk, look on your local vivanco stand for a 3mil jack y splitter....its most usefull hting i ever bought when it comes to the back of the pc ^^ i can have both phones and speakers conected with that, i just turn off/down the speakers for daytime use (my dad sleeps days as e works nights and my pc is next to his room)

and yeah, an extention is also usefull...i keep my sound in bedroom (ie, the loft) down to a reasonable level by pluging in a extention to my tv and a pair of unpowered speakers on my bed next to my pillow thru the extention..loud enoght to play games, but quiet to be able t play past moms bedtime hehe

um....in usa...the walmart plae is probably valid, theres also um...we used to call it Tandy....ah, Radio Shack...is it still going?

Radio Shack is still around, at least in Ohio (tons of stores). Only problem with Radio Shack is they tend to be high priced on evertying, espically conectors, extender cables, etc.

Thanks everyone. Think I've decided to avoid using my new headset through my speakers at all costs. If I dig under the bed, I should be able to find a y splitter I have. Otherwise, may just go for an extension, if the cord doesn't prove to be long enough on its own. Thanks again
