AVG Free, available at http://free.grisoft.com

Daily updates, free for private use, uses reasonable amounts of memory.

My preference is F-Secure Internet Security.

I first had Norton Antivirus plus ZoneAlarm. That worked reasonably well, except ZoneAlarm had issues with some games I wanted to play, and Norton Antivirus took tons of resources when scanning for viruses. Basically a NAV disk scan brought the whole system to a screeching halt, with software timing out all over the place.

Then I got Norton Internet Security 2005, because I'd been told it wasn't as resource hungry, and, well, it wasn't. The firewall worked fairly well, as did the antivirus, but it still felt like a lumbering giant, and pretty difficult to configure to work properly.

On a whim I tried AVG + Tiny Firewall, and frankly it was a pain; I kept getting annoying false positives from AVG and Tiny for software and sites I for a fact knew were clean. Still, they're free, so if money are short they'll do the job (only a bit too zealously).

Now I've got F-Secure Internet Security. It's been fairly smooth sailing, the one problem has been that programs which crash while trying to access the net may confuse the firewall, so I lose contact with the network until I've restarted the computer. Presumably this is a bug in the firewall software.

I don't know how effective any of them are at stopping viruses; the only viruses I've encountered have been a few mail worms like Melissa, and they've been easily stopped by all of them.

I'm using McAfee Antivirus (and Firewall), but probably because I get to use it for free. The DoD has a special home use program that allows employees to use it for free.

I have used Norton and absolutely hated it. It use WAY TOO MANY resources.

If I wasn't getting McAfee for free, I'd be using AVG without a second thought.

I have tried:

* Norton Anti-virus
* MC'Affee
* NOD32
* Avast
* Norman Anti-virus
* F-secure
* Zone Alarm
* Panda anti-virus
* Kaspersky

I can tell you that Norton is too clumsy. It takes too much resources and it can't repair anything.

For the highest security and best combination is this:
Panda antivirus + Norton's Firewall

For hardcore gamers:
NOD32 + Norton's Firewall

There's a bug in Zone Alarm's firewall that takes 50% of your bandwidth ( That's why I hear many players complaining about lagg )

I don't have time to write a full guide atm. That's my recommendations.

My 2 cents.

Hardware firewall all the way. I could never see myself using a software firewall, why needless use computer resources when more effective solutions are around?

As for AV, currently I'm tasting the flavor of eTrust EZ Armor.

all i have to say is that i hate norton

it cant delete half the viruses it detects (hardly any for that matter) and it slows the mess out of ur computer it takes so much just to run in the background, and u get worm protection messages wen u try to play certain game or do certain stuff

I use AVG. mainly coz of the update frequency, almost daily compared to Nortons Weekly/Monthly updates.
PLUS it's free.

CA eTrust® Antivirus

This is the best out there. works on servers and workstations without extravagant costs... Unlike most AV programs which charge a fortune for Server editions... Also there is a free trail to take advantage of and it works on everything.

Special offers in the past included a MS Offer for 1 month free trial. and $37 a yr after that. Thats what I use now...

learn to use Linux, windows viruses do not affect it. I use it for my everyday work, I only need to boot into windows to play games, and just that!

Best idea is to kepe checking the virus labs site. My personal recommendation would be Nod32, but to each his own.

I run Norton SystemWorks (includes GoBack and anti-virus) and Norton Firewall on my main system, because I have been happy with them and I get the whole package each year for little or nothing after rebates.

For the other systems in the house and workshop, including my daughter's system, I run AVG anti-virus and ZoneAlarm (both free).

Keeping them updated is a must. Had to reload Windows on my granddaughters system last month, after a trojan took it down. Took quite awhile to retrieve her music files, saved games, etc, and get it back up, all because neither she nor her mom bothered to keep it updated.
