You might have had your account stolen. This happened to me once while I was in game, it kicked me off. So I immediately changed my password. I haven't had the problem again but I am definately scared it might happen.

Quit out of GW, press CTRL + ALT + DEL, go to the processes tab (on win xp), find and end all instances of GW.exe. Then start GW again. I get that message regularly, and this always solves my problem.

Actually, this has happened to me quite often. Everytime it happened - 5 times or so now - I just restarted my computer and it was fine. Of course, Red Locust's idea should work, but I havn't tried it so i can't vouche.
And to the replies about someone else using your account, it should not matter, seeing as the problem is the actual STARTING up of Guild Wars.

Uhh guys, he's not in guildwars, he's trying to start it up and windows is telling him that it's already running.
Reboot the computer and try again, if that fails, uninstall guild wars and reinstall it.

the problem is when you last played guild wars and exited it didnt end all the processes related to it properly. easy fix is to reboot the comp. or just end the processes in task manager as has already been suggested.

Uhh we know, but sometimes if you close a program, it still sometimes has the actual Process of it running in the Processing List, and as you can only have 1 Process of Guild Wars running (the tricks of registry editing aside) it won't let him, hold Ctrl, and Alt, press 'Del' and let go and a Windows Task Manager should come up, go on 'Processes', find 'Gw.exe', right-click End Process Tree, OK.
Not listed? Re-Boot.
Update us.

When ever you are having PC issues, the first thing you always try is REBOOTING THE SYSTEM. 99% of the time it corrects the problem.
Reboot or terminate the GW.exe process like everyone else has mentioned.

Ah the three R's of computers:
Reboot?
Re-install?
Re-format! (The last, but ultimate fix for non-hardware issues)
Of course some specific problems can be solved by other specific solutions.
