Default Guild Wars client not working

Hello all, this is my first post on GWGuru only because it seems the day I signed up for GWguru my GW stopped working. I don't see any correlation between the two.

I've tried reinstalling the game several times and even attempted downloading it directly from the guildwars website. I've checked the firewall and my server is working fine because I can play all my other games, Pokerstars, CS, Halo for PC, and D2. I don't know why it stopped working just happened liek a week or two ago I started experiencing difficulty. It would take minutes to log-in as opposed to the first few weeks I played in which I could connect within seconds. As time progressed the times got longer and longer until eventually I couldn't connect at all. Now however it doesn't connect at all and it is added to my firewall exception list. I just leave it running and then when I go to X out the program it shuts down, well sometimes freezes, but normall shuts down however the process remains open and I have to go to ctrl+alt+del to end the process directly. Then if I open it up again it doesn't go down to window size as I had it set and it doesn't remember my e-mail even though I"ve clicked the box. I don't know what to do anymore, so any suggestions would help. Also, I just want to say that the game worked flawlessy no more than 2-3 weeks ago and I haven't changed anything on the server or PC since.

My comp specs if you need:
Pent 4
2.53 ghz
1 gig of ram
service pack 2, windows XP PRO
Total 75 gbs of hard drive space, 45 free gbs.
video card has 64 mb and i have updated directx

Need anymore info please just post and I"ll try to get it to you. Best way to contact me is probably AIM: Simpsonsaddict11. Sometimes I"m on D2 @ *ericdaman12, x-fre: ericdaman12, steam: ericdaman

**edit** Haha, thanks for appropriate topic title change. Also, if it makes a difference the lightning bolt in the top right corner continues to increase, upto about 90 mbs as of now, from what I understand which is little, that means I'm downloading from arenanet? Why can't I connect then? Argh this is aggrevating.

Any help really appreciated.

more info would be nice, you say you get the lightening bolt, so the client is working?? (the Gw.exe Loads i mean) your getting to the log-in screen..

If your trying to log-in, and thats the problem, whats the error code or mesage it gives?

If your running a firewall (I see you are) I would suggest disabling it totally and then trying it, Especially if its Norton....

If your running a router, again, i would suggest port mapping ports 6112-6119

try thoes, and come back with the results

That's the thing it never gets to an error code, I used to get the error code that says can't connect to sever, can't remmeber the number, but for now I don't get any error code just stay stuck in "connecting..." window.

I've turned off my firewall, it's the windows SP2 one and I'm still not able to connect.

As for if the lightning bolt thing means the client is working, I'm not sure. You know which lightning bolt I"m talking about right? The one in the top right that's supposed to tell you if you're streaming content. Well it's that one and it's increasing I've got it to 500mb before.

As for port mapping, unsure of how to do this, so if someone could either put up a link for a tutorial or type out how to do it, but all my other programs work fine, don't know whyp orts would be the problem.

Hope tthe extra info helped. Post if you have ANY ideas or need any more information.

If you do indeed have a router swapping it to gaming mode may also help. I know Belkin and several other router manufacturers have a gaming mode which allows for extended connection times without the periodic security time out. While you normally never notice this microsecond bump in your router throughput it can be enough to keep a game from connecting. I had similar issues with my old Belkin router and all I had to do was bump it to gaming mode.

drop into your command prompt and type in ping -r1 www.guildwarsguru.com. You'll get a message that will say Reply from 00.00.00.00: bytes=32 time=294ms TTL=56
Route: 209.179.21.76

the number after route is your routers IP address. Type that in to your web browser and it should drop you into the routers configuration. If that doesn't work I hope you saved your documentation and books on that router because they should be able to tell you what the configuration IP is for your particular piece of hardware.

Anyway from the configuration screen you should be able to set it to gaming mode if it is a simple home router. If not then there is some configuring to do that might be a little more difficult and I don't particularly feel like typing it all out here. So try that first then if that doesn't work I'll tell you how to set it up the hard way but be warned, if you fail to follow my instructions exactly you could screw up your router to the point of flashing the firm ware.
