Default 2 Meg download every log in?

Every time I log into GuildWars, I have to wait while it downloads about 2 megs worth of data. This even happens if I log out and then immediately log back in with the same character.

I think it has something to do with peoples' capes, as if I take a character to a deserted town like Fisherman's Haven, it does not happen.

2 megs every time I log in is too much. I'm on dialup, so that's a 30 minute wait every time I switch characters.

Is there a way to prevent this? Or is GuildWars now officially unplayable by dialup users?

I am dialup and, as of Friday morning, can no longer get in to GW on either account I have. I have been dealing with tech support and it is like talking to a tree. Hope you fare better than I have.

leave it sit on the login screen and download what it is going to download .

you are getting the full Factions game like it or not so people can simply unlock it on opening day and play without a massive download then.

this is official information not rumor

If I had Dial-up still I would start the "download" right before bed around 11pm...leave it running all night. This is what I use to do for updates back in the day.

hi Dood

did you ever get wild back in the day and overclock your dx2 66mhz to get 12 fps instead of 8 fps?

do you remember having a small drawer of special boot discs just to get enough stuffed in himem so the game would run at all?

the dos editing you had to do if it didnt work at all?

ah the good old days

I remember playing the original X-Wing on a IBM PC 386 system with a 20 MB HDD. I remember playing said game without sound, with a mouse for control, and that I could only get so far in each of the three Tours of Duty before the system would crash back out to Dos with insufficent memory.

And I remember that particularly hard mission in ToD 2 (mission 4) where you have to protect the Medical firgate while 3 Lambda class shuttles and one Corvette have to dock to offload wounded. Got a cool medal at the end of that mission the first time I completed it.

They should come out with a new X-Wing... and TIE Fighter for that matter with today's technology. X-Wing Alliance, although really good, is pretty aged now itself. Okay, I'm way OT now...

I'd say it has to do with Anet giving us some of the beta weekend stuff early so that when its time we all dont have to download a really really big amount of stuff. It'll probably clear up after the weekend.

If you sit at the login screen, you'll notice a little lightning bolt on the top right corner with a number that keeps growing. I think that's your download status. Mine went up to over 200MB on each computer that I play GW on. Sounds like Anet is forcing you to dload 2MB at each login to spread out your waiting time. You should sit at the login screen when you aren't playing to download as much as possible. If you finish downloading, the lightning bolt seems to disappear from the login screen.
