Default Steps to help u run GW without problems

Hi all
Reading this part of the forum, most of the issues are lag, lag and more lag.
Some of the problems are on ur computer, some r not.

so heres a few steps to follow when u get some wierd problems with GW:

1. Update all ur drivers (sometimes not a good idea, cause new drivers may bring new problems)
2. Lower ur graphics effects and see if u get the same results/problems/issues.
3. Lower Sound quality (if u have a built in sound card) but if u have a powerfull comp, not needed (AMD 64 or X2 or new Intels) recent update with the sound should be fixed
4. Scan for viruses/spyware/etc
5.Remove unneeded programs/processes (like ipod service, java scheduler, realplayer, etc) to free up ur memory and CPU time
6. Most people dont realize that ur files are all over ur HD....DO DEFRAG!!!!!!!!
ur GW folder is about 1.5 Gigs or more....
7. Ur connection speed will vary, it all depends on trafic, ur ISP, etc
check dslreports.com and do a speed test.
if u feel that ur connection is slow...do a simple test ...ping ur DNS server
Click START->RUN, type CMD (press ENTER)
at the DOS prompt, type "ipconfig /all" and see whats the IP for a DNS server (u might get 1 or 3) then @ the DOS prompt, type "ping xx.xxx.x.xxx -t"
xxx are numbers....
if u have a router, open ur browser and login to ur router, check the status and see whats the DNS numbers are....
the reason of that little test is...when u get response times in 300-500ms u have a problem with ur connection or ISP is lagin, so u call the tech support and u tell them that ur DNS pings are in 300-500ms or more and u want them to check ur DSL/Cable modem or do a line test, etc.
Also, ask the tech guys to check for dropped packets (this will increase ur lag, cause ur computer has to resend all/some info again multiple times)

I probably missed a few things, but u'll add them to the replies

good luk and have fun

8. Always remember to clean out your computer regularly with a can of compressed air, make sure that cards are seated properly, all fans work, and that all connections are still solid. Dust and dirt buildup fairly quickly sometimes, and can often cause your computer to overheat, leading to spontaneous shutdown, rebooting, and sometimes even physical damage.

Nice idea for a thread btw.

I was thinking of making a guide on how to run Guild Wars fine and many frequently questioned problems with all the solutions possible, but in more depth.

Kudos to you.

You still ought to take it into consideration, especially in case the more generic questions/solutions in this thread aren't answered by the information given.

Kudos to you for thinking of making an in-depth guide.

I dont think we need in depth article on how to rebuild ur computer
its a good idea, but most of the peeps here...dont even know which CPU they have or how to get some info out the box....
dont get me wrong, I'm not bashing u, just stating the fact.
also, if its in depth, some peeps will get lost in in (all the lingo, wierd names, etc)
post some simple stuff that even ur mom and dad can do after reading it

plus most of the problems are USER related..... do maintanace on ur computer!!!!!! I dont think u would drive a car for 1 year without changing oil, canging air filters and so on....

ohh and BTW, I'm gonna need those TPS reports by monday!

^^ I wasn't gonna go on about re-build your Computer, I was gonna go into detail on exact problems that are frequently asked and other minor notices with solutions and of course if I went into more depth, it would be understandable to the average user.
