Default Missing sounds vs Service pack version

I recently contacted GW support to report the problem with missing sounds that I got after the GW audio engine upgrade (and especially after the DX8 to DX9 change). They told me it is probably caused by the fact that I don't have XP Service pack 2.
So, is there anyone with SP2 who has problems with missing sounds as well? Or is it really the ultimate fix?

I think there are hotfixes (most likely non "public" ones) that SP2 had that updated things with the internal sound subsystem.

Also may want to grab this one if you use 7.1 sound

SYMPTOMS

After an application calls the Microsoft DirectSound SetSpeakerConfig method and specifies either the DSSPEAKER_7POINT1_SURROUND value or the DSSPEAKER_7POINT1_WIDE value, Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel does not correctly display the setting in the Speaker Setup list.

I have tried it with 3 different sound cards, Im using XP SP2 and have had the issue a few times, Some times theres some sound, some times theres none, other times its fine, and some times it works, but sounds like its coming from a tin-can...

Latest DirectX, Sercive Pack 2 (Fresh install) - latest updates, I have tried it in Stereo, Headphones, 4 Point, 4.1, 5.1, and 7.1, and the same results every time...

SB Audigy 1
SB Audigy 2
and nVidia OnBoard

all give the same results..

Curious would you be willing to try 3rd party audio card drivers that people swear by are better then creative drivers for creative sound cards?

I think I'm going to try these drivers to see if they fix an issue with my ATI TV Wonder Pro (Tv capture). This is NOT for the faint at heart.

I still think there still tweaking / fixing the audio engine but I bet there "testing" environment that they use to test it on are XP SP2 base level machine so the "upgrade to SP2" response is to get the machine more towards there "test" environment. Side Note: I do think SP2 for XP is very soild and does add lot of nice features.

Just FYI, the missing sounds are more noticeable on some cards than on others. Other factors include which weapons are used, and what zone the player is in (for instance, sword hits or fire arrow explosions are often missing, and Ring of Fire is a particularly bad region).

I'm sure a fix is on the way.
