Default Norton Anti-virus: "We own your computer :)"

Norton wont go away, no matter how hard I try to remove it.

SymNRT

It will purge your system of Norton, however; you will need Dial-a-fix to repair BITS. SymNRT breaks BITS which is essential to Auto-Updates.

You can get Dial-a-fix here

Go to my computer and click Local Drive(C then click Promgram Files and delete the folder. That should get rid of it. It's a pretty sucking virus protection. Ifyou wnat a reliable and free virus protection go to google and type. "Free AVG Download" It will give you a direct link to download it. Fallow the link till it show a link to download for Windows or Linux depening on what OS(operating system) your using. It scans your emails and does a scheduled scan of your whole system files. Very safe and works wonders and fast even if you have a lot of viruses and wurms. Every week oyu will get a quick and easy file and when I say I mean QUICK.

I would not suggest to anyone to delete their Program Files folder (which is how you have it worded). The best way is to use the SymNRT tool in my prior post, which cleans out the registry, Program Files directory and Common Files directory, along with a few other places that Norton installs it's junk.

If the original poster needs a new anti-virus, I would highly recommend Avast, as AVG misses a lot of viruses and often cannot move/remove/delete/etc what it finds.

Doesn't Zonealarm lay waste to your processor the longer you leave it on? By that i mean it takes up a greater % of it the longer its on, least thats what i heard anyway.

Been using AVG for a year and not had a single virus issue. Even search for them by file name in the registry. But back to the issue at hand.

All I said was to delete the single folder for the Norton program not all of them if that what oyu though tI meant. >_<

Yeah, ZoneAlarm is a leech as well. For a firewall I personally use Outpost Pro by Agnitum, and for an AntiVirus I currently use the 1 year free trial of e-Trust. (I don't even need an AV running, truthfully.) On my VirtualPC I run Avast, where I test tons of applications and more!

As i found with my pc before the thing screwed itself to hell.

Norton Anti-Virus sucks, i left my pc on for ONE night by accident, came to it the next morning and the entire registry and everything in Windows, C-drive etc had all been corrupted from a virus or somet.

The 1 good thing, when the pc got wiped it took Norton with it, so if your really desperate to get rid of it

Yeah, Norton is a bit of a resource hog. Other than that, when I had used it I suffered no other issue. Eventually I went to something that doesn't take up much for resources at all and has been quite effective as far as I know so far.

As for Firewall. Hardware router all the way, there is no substitute in my mind.

I have tried control panel add remove programs and it says I need to logged on as a supervisor
then I log on as a superviser and it says I need to be logged to an account with password privelages, then in safe mode I try to delete the folder and it says the same thing.

Try the methods I mentioned, they won't rip apart your computer (any worse than Norton has) like what Leon suggested.

If being logged in as the Administrator doesn't let you uninstall, the SymNRT tool will.

This thread has mentioned two of the very worst programs and two of the very best

Worst: Norton, ZoneAlarm

best: Avast, Outpost Firewall

That tool from Norton will remove it properly. Norton AV is almost as bad as a Sony Rootkit

Norton is purposely hard to manually remove since a lot of viruses usually try to disable or delete your virus software when they infect you. If you have Norton 2006 I believe it has self-repairing abilities for when viruses try to remove it....which would unfortunately make it even harder for manual removal if the uninstall is broken. Corporate Edition 10 (2006) does, anyway. And yes Norton is definitely a resource hog... but I use it because it blocks spyware, viruses, etc, and you can get virus definitions 2-3 times a day if you want with the beta definitions. I know it's not the best in efficiency with system resources, but I do enjoy its constant updates and available customer service. No problems with it here...

Sygate is a shotty firewall that can cause issues, including BSoDs. Outpost Pro covers all the features you need, ad-blocking, extensive protection, even an excellent Anti-Spyware.

I'm pretty sure what he meant was go to c:/program files/ then delete the folder named "Norton" or "Crappiest virus protection ever" or whatever they name it.
