Lightbulb Let's help ANet Kill the LAG Monster

We all experience (bad) lags and no better way to kill the lag monster but to let ANet do their job, but they need us as well.

There is a GW Tool that they created which you can download here: Net Info Tool - GW

The instructions are here: PlayNC Support (scroll way down the bottom)
as quoted:
Quote:
please contact our Technical Support department via the "Ask a Question" tab and provide them with the following information:

* Are you connecting through a router, hub, or switch? If so, what is the name and model number?
* Are you on a home, campus, or business network?
* Are you using a firewall application? If so which one?
* Do you use any Internet security applications (ISA) such as CYBERsitter, Net Nanny, ZoneAlarm®, McAfee®, or Norton™?
* What is the name of your Internet provider?
* What type of connection do you have (cable, DSL, dial-up)?
* Where are you located?
* Download our Network Information Tool, run it and attach the "network_data_GW" text file that it produces: ftp://ftp.guildwars.com/diag/netinfotool_allos_gw.exe
* Run HijackThis and attach a logfile of the scan results.

If you contact us regarding a lag issue and do not provide the above information, we will assume that you have not reviewed this article nor have you performed the troubleshooting steps contained within. As a result, our first response will recommend that you complete these initial troubleshooting steps and reply with the requested information if they do not resolve the lag issue.
Additionally, during one of Gaile's chatsessions, she mentioned that when the lag happens, we should report it (using the tool above) that moment, for them to catch what's causing the lag while it is happening and/or while it is fresh.

I agree, there's no point reporting it after minutes or even hours of the lag spikes and it may be near impossible to catch what caused it.

So there, let's help one another so we can all enjoy the game more.

* Note: lag term used in a negative tone, not the original meaning.

Meh, I already know what's causing the lag.

Someone at the Anet headquaters must be heavily downloading porn and sucking up bandwith.

Tech Support sucks regardles of the tools that they suggest. It's going to be a problem for a long time since TS prefers not to report problems to their department head half the time.

My computer is a gaming computer that I built, and it can absolutely own this game. I built it to get away from lag, and while I have gotten away from lag caused by bad hardware, I now run into Anet lag. I will be walking, and my skills and stuff are still wearing off, etc, but I can't control my character, he just goes zooming forward.

Has anyone noticed that there seem to be more farming bots? And along with them, more lag? The answer isn't to nerf what the bots farm, the answer is to get at the bots... somehow. If the bots were causing the lag, I really wouldn't mind having something that makes you type in the letters you see every time you enter an area. That way the bots wouldn't be able to enter the letters, and wouldn't get into their farming areas...

That's a good and bad idea at the same time. I support it, but I think that other people will not like it because it may be annoying. If it prevents bots and isn't something ridiculous (which that isn't) then it's fine with me.

90% of the lag your experiencing in-game isnt Anet, its providers and routes between A-net servers, and between A-net and yourself, like at this moment (9:45pm GMT+0) I cant get into Heros Ascent International District's -- This has happened before, its A-Nets Europe Provider, and thier international routing..

the tool they give you, provides information to them as-to which hosts/routes you can/cannot reach, so they can then see which provider is causing the issues, and work with them to resolve it..

I can't believe I didn't think of that...and I call myself a network and security student, pshh. I suprised, though, that the EU servers are having problems, usually they kick ass. Heck, I'm tempted to move to Sweeden partially because most standard connections over there run at 100Mbit unlike the US's crappy, expensive-as-hell 3Mbit DSL and 6Mbit Cable.

Yeah regardless of how awesome your hardware is there are still bottlenecks along the route. You don't have a direct line into the Guild Wars Servers. It could just as easily be one of your ISP nodes as it is the Guild Wars Servers. One way to find out for sure is to run a tracert and check the pings at each node along the way.

I blame it on the Bots. There has been an influx of the buggers lately.

Thanks, I think I have said this about 20 times in not so few a words. Guess making it short is easier to read.

With factions coming out and people dusting off there old characters that have not playing in a while, Anet is going to be experience growing pains in terms of there server being hit. There is a spike now and a huge spike within a week. Expect PvP/PvE preview event issues during the 1st week of factions launch.

But the main point as other pointed out with lag (if not your pc) is the networks between your pc and anet's server.
