Ok! I was whining about my computer's slow speed in switching betweeen things
to a friend, and i asked him what his mem. usage for GW was. he replied with 60k. i was amazed/confused/sad. mine is at 180k-260k, 4 times more then his.
is this due to our computers different stats, and if so, how much does this mem usage actually slow my computer? and how can i improve it? is it ram, vid card, processor....
it is a laptop, 2ghz 3200 64bit, 128 dedicated video ram, 200m ati , 512 system ram

Right Click set priority won't work. Windows resets the priority automatically based on what mode the program is in.

He can try a heapsize switch however. That will cut on memory usage, but GW will saturate just about any CPU on the market unless it has dual cores. Which in that case, one core will be saturated.

Most likely due to what processes you are running at the time, or what else you are doing besides playing Guild Wars (esepcially when you are in Window Mode).

I have a gig of RAM and Guild Wars takes about 300k memory when I play, but when I'm downloading stuff, etc it takes about 200k.

And wow! 43 processes on a laptop? I guess you'll be fine since you have 512 and a nice CPU, but my desktop usually has less than 35 processes and my laptop has around 20.

You can eliminate unnecessary startup processes by going to start-run-'msconfig'-startup, and then unchecking the ones you dont need. This helps in deciding which ones to eliminate: www.processlibrary.com

43 processes is a normal number when not using a resource hog like GW.

i have a few stopped, but i left all i wasnt sure of

i used Spybot to check/uncheck em

Applies only for GW, actually [or was GW what you ment by "program"]. GW seems to have some kind of built in priority control, that sets the priority to 'low' when you alt-tab off the game, or while in windowed mode, select another window.

Haven't had any problems with priority settings with other software

Nope. Quite a few programs have that type of feature.

43 can be a bit excessive on the running processes side. It depends on the users and what they are running on their computer however.

Wrath of Dragons, you say you have used Spybot S&D, but have you scanned with anything else?

Thank you. I've collected and constantly update those packages with freeware found all over the web. There are a few packages made for the bare minimum (Windows 9x/ME - Dialup), and the Full and Pro packages include definition updates for the scanning software; so if people want they can download it all in one shot.

I do however need to update those within the next few days, as a new Windows Defender is out.

That's a few too many processes for me. I have my computer highly optimized for gaming so it's in the low twenties and that's including an AV running.

Unfortunately there is nothing good about Norton. Your computer can't operate with it (bogged down by lots of memory eating processes and viruses it will not detect and remove) to the fact that when you uninstall, many things simply won't go. Memory leaks: There is no perfect program. No matter how much your code is optimized, there are still possible leaks. So leaving your Guild Wars running over a long period of time can make the memory usage cummulate, especially if you're logged in the game screen. This is something that you cannot do about.

Just close your guild wars and restart it again, computer needs rests too.

i run avg free, spybot, and adaware. i uninstalled norton, it takes over a computer like AOL. an as for prosesses running, i went to that process library website and checked em out....they all are "necessary". and when i said i was using spybot, i meant i was using it to block startup processes as well as scan.

You might need to shut down some un needed services in the Service Manager instead of just shutting down processes.

spybot has a section that lets me choose which processes are allowed to startup or not
