When is the last time you got your disk cleaned?
- Defrag your disk and do a scan disk to check for bad sectors.

Make sure the directory you're installing to is NOT:
- Read-only
- Hidden
- Encrypted
- Compressed

That's all I could think of

Are you an administrator on your computer? If you're not you can't d/l anything or install anything without being on the admins account.

Yes to all, everything seems normal.
I'm checking the setting on both PCs and the one that does not work has the same exact settings as the one that has Guild wars working on it.

I'm the admin on both PCs.

I had the same problem so I went to the support section of the GW website and sent a message explaining my problem. This is the reply I got

Quote:
Hi ----------,
It sounds like your directory may be corrupted. please try renaming the directory then opening the GW.exe file from inside the changed directory.

Regards,
Guild Wars Technical Support
So I changed the name of my Guild Wars folder by just adding another S at the end. The game then went through downloading about 2600 files (~55MB) and is now working again. Now I just have to figure why I'm getting a corrupted directory. I hope my hard drive isn't dying.

EDIT: I just tried logging into my necromancer and instead of starting up in Lion's Arch like normal it started downloading 8800+ files. I think I'll just go to sleep and leave it on. No use trying to get any gaming in tonight I guess

I did kinda the same last night (I actually uninstalled the whole game and reinstalled it in another directory)
It worked fine and the game was running normal.

This morning before coming to work I started the PC and got the same message when starting the game

I did a system restore of the last point and before I left work the game was starting.

It seems that the issue happens when a new build is out and one has to close and restart GW.

Any one else has the same issue?

I have tomorrow off for the head start and if everytime a new build starts the problem again then its will get hectic trying to rename the folder each time and downloading 10,000 + files.

Anyone from the guild wars support checks this forum?

I'm installing it on the e:\ drive that has all my other games and all of them are running fine.
I updated a couple of them yesterday just to make sure that I can write to the drive and they worked just fine.

What type of software are you running in the background? Do you have any virus protection or a hardware/software firewall that could be blocking the patch?

No, we don't. Our Firewalls support the game entirely.

My problem was fixed yesteday when I did the same thing ~ Reinstall.

Now, it's showing me the same damn message.

I'm not playing this shit if I have to reinstall after every update.

You really shouldn't have to reinstall after every update. I have 4 different PCs which I run GW on and all of them are working fine. The only time I had an issue is on one of my machienes was blocking the update without notifying me.

Is there any other programs running in the BG? I usually have IM and some sort of music program going.

I wouldn't have considered the XP bois if I was having this issue. Thats an interesting theory.

For non-posters who are having issues here is a related thread.

Guild Wars is installed directly on my C: drive under C:/Games/Guild Wars and I've been having the same problems. Renaming the folder like I was instructed by tech support just ends up downloading and reinstalling the whole thing from scratch.

I'm still trying to find out what's the specific problem but in the mean time I've been to renaming the folder and then saving the huge .dat file before I try restarting GW. When it starts to reinstall/update I just cancel and then copy over the .dat file. It's tedius but until I can get the game to update normally it beats having to sit through a 10,000+ download and file decompression.

Hello again, I've made a fix for this bug.

Ok, so we all know that the only way to play GW now is to reinstall the game right?

Well it's the worse solution out there, so don't even bother.

But... it's the only way...and we can improve it's speed.

Here is an example on how to fix this : Say if your bugged GW is currently in D drive...

D-Program Files-Guild Wars

Open the GW folder and back up the big Dat. file, put it somewhere that won't be deleted and can be kept safe.

Now, reinstall your GW. You can use the client from www.guildwars.com if you like to.

After the the Log In screen pops up, close it, copy and paste the big Dat. file back inside your GW folder, which should have a fresh and running version of GW.

And wala, GW is up and running without having to download 5000+ files.

You might have to do this each time GW releases a new build, until Anet can give us a patch that will be able to fix this up.

I thought up of this fix during a boring class of history, and I'm not sure how I can test it without getting home to my PC and wait for a new build to be released, until then, well lets consider this fix and put a bookmark on it.

Check this and let me know if it fixes it.

Start System Restore by going to:
Start-> Programs->accessories->system tools

Now check for a restore point (should be created by the system) called Software Distribution Tool (or something similar to that) that has been created on Tuesday of this week.

If you have it then use that system restore point and restore your PC.

WARNING: Doing this might delete some files of programs you have installed after that point.

The reason I want to check if you guys have this or not is because once I did that it fixed the problem with GW.

Once the restore is done start GW and it should start and updates. Do not use any old .DAT files. Just start the game and it should start downloading everything.

Also make sure that you are not running the AGV Virus scanner. I found out that it somehow interferes with GW. Try to get Norton or another program.

I updated my GW support ticket on the status of the issue and asked them to keep my ticket open for a week or so just to make sure everything is ok.
