Default Unable to Initialize 3D Output. Please Read.

Right, I know there has been alot of posts about this...but none of the answers given in those help me.

Firstly, specs:

Athlon 64 4000
GeForce 7800GTX
2GB Corsair XMS3200 RAM

Secondly, drivers:

Latest nVidia Graphics Driver (84.21)
Latest DirectX (9.0c)

This started happening today. I've been playing this game for a year, and it's been fine. What has gone wrong? Nothing has changed on my computer in the past few weeks other than what Guild Wars has downloaded onto my computer.

Whenever I try and load up Guild Wars, I get a black screen for a few seconds, then the 'Unable to initialise 3D output' message. And my desktop icons get moved into default positions . Also, when I restart my computer following this message, Guild Wars runs fine again for a while, then it freezes and stops responding.

I went into DxDiag.exe and all the files are fine. However, when I tried to 'Test Direct3D' it came up with this error message:

' Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x887602eb (error code) '

What the hell is going on? Can anyone help? I can find nothing of this on the Guild Wars support site.

first, uninstall and reinstall your video drivers, see if that helps

then, monitor your card's temps. try rthdribl in windowed mode to see how hot your card gets.

is your card overclocked? lately even some of the "factory overclocked" ones are being reported to have problems until dropped back to reference speeds. if it's o/c'ed, lower it down and see if that helps.

all else fails, could be a bad card.

My cards fine, I can run BF2 perfect and other such games. It's not overclocked, and the card doesn't go above 50c, and only goes that high after hours of heavy use. Reinstalling current drivers doesn't help...however...

...I think I may have found the problem!

The latest nVidia drivers (84.21) don't work properly, it seems they have trouble supporting Direct3D. Try installing the previous drivers (81.98 I think). It has solved my problems.
