Question Unsolvable connection problem?

Hi all

I have been playing GW for about 2 months. I have it installed on my desktop and my laptop (so I can play in my lunch at work). I have had no problems until just after the release of Factions.

When I'm at home, both the desktop and laptop will connect and play with no problems whatsoever. However, since early May I have been unable to connect at work. The grey box stays stuck at 0% indefinitely.

I am the IT guy at the company, so I know nothing has changed here in terms of port blocks etc. Even so, I have tried explicity forwarding 80 and 6112 to my laptop. I have tried disabling the AV and ZoneAlarm. I have even tried using alternate DNS servers (although that shouldn't be a factor).

However the problem cannot be my laptop as it still works from home. This would suggest a connection problem at work - however read on...

I contacted Anet support and a great guy suggested a few things that unfortunately didn't work. In a moment of desperation I uninstalled and reinstalled. It worked... I logged in and even had time for my assassin to dance a while. I left it to download the rest of the content (about 1GB worth), exited GW and restarted so the updates could apply... and got the same connection problem again, and that is where I'm still at now...

I can't remember the exact day the game stopped connecting at work, but it was towards the start of May. There were a couple of build updates at this time (one without any notes), so I asked the Anet guy if anything had changed which might cause the firewall/AV/connection to play up. He assured me nothing had changed, so I tried installing on a friend's work PC. Same problem - connecting fine until updated...

The work ISP is NTL cable, and the only devices between me and internet are the modem and a Watchguard firewall. Laptop is an Acer 1654 (running the game very well at home).

I miss my lunchtime GW! Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

possibly a recent update didnt correspond w/ ur ISP and made it faulty, possibly your isp doesnt support GW or a firewall is blocking it

Thanks - Yep those were my thoughts - obviously the recent builds are fine for most, but my work connection doesn't like it.

Does anyone know what, if anything, has changed connectivity-wise in recent builds? If I know what changes were made I at least have a chance to work around them...

If you have Windows Firewall enabled, go into it's Settings via Security Centre in Control Panel, and reset Firewall exceptions/allows/blocked lists, so it asks again all programs for connectivity for Block or Unblock.

Just now, a Steam update came (steampowered.com/Valve) and it wouldn't connect, read there Support Centre, and got a suggestion. So I reset my Windows Firewall, and it connected first time, and I'm playing CS:S now fine.

I'm having the same problem, stuck at the connecting to ArenaNet 0%.

Was working fine yesterday then just packed up. I uninstalled my firewall with no help.

After mailing support, they told me to reinstall, but don't really have enough bandwidth for the updates so if anyone else tries this please let me know how it goes.

Thanks all for posting. It seems I'm not alone!

Sounds like we have all taken the obvious, like firewalls and routing, out the equation. To the guy on AOL - you may like to check your modem/router firmware is up to date, as I have read about problems with GW on AOL with certain models.

There must be some ISP issues with recent builds. Those who have posted similar problems, I would be interested to know if reinstalling works for you. For me it worked until everything was downloaded (for those concerned about the size of the download client, it's just over 1GB).

This could suggest proxy problems on the ISP side - perhaps certain models used by ISPs just don't like GW traffic...

I had no problems with my router before moving to AOL. Im just trying to re-install guildwars but the installer just goes straight to downloading and hangs there forever.
Is that normal ?
