Default ARGH! Overnight meltdown.

NVidia N-Force Audio
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
512 MB RAM
80 GB hard drive
Athlon processor (not sure what kind)

Sometime last weekend... saturday i believe... Factions crashed twice. I didn't save the error message because it made my computer restart as well after i sent to a-net. Now, since then, it's been visually lagging to the point of absolute unplayability, it takes 10 times longer to load areas than before the crash, it takes 7-10 seconds to open inventory, guild menu, any other menus... I have no explanation for it. Steps i've taken to no avail each time:

1. Restarted.
2. Shut down for 1 hour.
3. Cleaned up old files, deleted tons of stuff i dont use (currently 18 gb free)
4. Defragged
5. Shut off Norton
6. Shut down every unnecessary background process.
7. Repair installation
8. Graphics, sound quality down to lowest levels.

Nothing. Nothing works. I have no clue what to do, it just STOPPED working.

One thing I noticed was during defrag it showed a file in the GW folder that was fragmented... unable to defragment. I assume that could be thecause but since i repair installed i dont see how. Should i completely uninstall and reinstall GW, prophecies AND factions?

check for updates, might be helpful. And you could try a few things the techs get us to do, such as a DNS flush , and shut down all programs in the background that don't need to be on while running GW.
You could also try to delete the gw.dat file and have it all reload, but that one is a long time to do. Could be that something went flighty in your computer that weekend and that might be why you got the crashes. Might be good to check your computer devise manager for any conflicts....just a thought.

the GW.DAT file is almost always fragmented as its a large dat file with all the update pieces of the game... I keep mine backed up cause it can go corrupt on you on occasion and having a backup of it means you don't have to redownload everything again...

In your case I will recommend either doing a full reinstall from cds or deleting GW.dat and doing a manual update by doing "GW.exe -update". This will redownload the entire 2gb DAT file... Hope your not on dial up...

good luck.

ingy.

PS if you have GW on two machines, Like one on laptop and one on main like I do. then you can just copy the good GW.DAT from one to teh other through the network. that works sometimes too....

Reinstall the .dat from your GWF CD? That way you won't have to download the entire thing back. This is assuming, of course, that your CD isn't corrupt. Cross your fingers.

When you try to log on, does it say "repairing data archive"? If so, that means the DAT is corrupt and you need to fix it.
