hi all, i was wondering if somebody might be able to help me with this series of problems playing gw.

1. if i do not disable my soundcard when i load up gw, gw will eventually freeze and a high pitched sound will come from the speakers (sort of like a television test signal). i tried uninstalling my soundblaster x-fi, reinstalling the drivers, downgrading to a 5.1 live card, etc....no dice. interestingly enough, the comp has frozen in the same manner when i watch movies on my computer, although the incidence is MUCH less. basically, if i leave the audio card enabled, gw is a guaranteed crash, while watching movies, i might crash every 2 weeks or so maybe.

2. sometimes, connection to gw will get cut. when i minimize to desktop and peek at my wireless info, it says it has a very good connection, connected to internet, etc...but even if i try to access a webpage, the internet will essentially be "frozen." this problem goes away in like 30 seconds, but whenever it happens while i'm playing gw, it's a guaranteed boot to the login screen, which really sucks when i'm pvping or when i'm in some place like HoH or SF.

3. sometimes, my card will disconnect and have to reconnect to the router and internet...this is a deadly problem in pvp, but not as bad in pve, since this is probably the only problem i have that is recoverable. i just wait like 15 seconds and then i'm good to go again. i use a netgear rangemax WPN824 (has all these blinky blue lights) and a rangemax WPN311 adapter which supposedly are made for each other, but this stuff happens a lot.

4. lastly, i often get these long periods of incredible lag where it takes sometimes 5 or more seconds for a skill i pressed to even resolve on the screen. also during this period, i warp around on the map, kind of like rubberbanding around objects.

if anyone can help shed some light on the issue, i'd be really grateful. it's extra annoying, since before factions, i played GW perfectly on this very computer (albeit with a cable connection to my router, not wireless). now, if i'm not lagging out, i'm getting a freeze crash.

I would say gaming on wireless is your main issue. When I used to game on a wireless connection, it would often lose connectivity, then reconnect repeatedly. Often it would cause my entire computer to freeze up, and I would have to reboot. The server side of things on GW has some issues as well at times, but with a hardwire connection, nothing ever freezes unless it's from lag. Even in those situations, the whole computer doesn't freeze, just the game temporarily. I would imagine that's the problem with your sound card as well. When I was just regularily surfing or downloading I wouldn't get any lock-ups. When a wireless card loses connectivity and the CPU is maxed from games or whatever, it pulls more strength from other resources to keep the connection going usually. Also, if somebody else is connected to the router and downloading things or even using bandwidth, that can cause your connection to fail repeatedly. Even though it's not noticeable from looking at the little icon that says "super duper connection strength" *wink wink*

IMO wireless is good for laptops and other portable devices that can use it, but I usually leave the gaming to hardwire connections. If you really don't have much of an option right now for a hardwire connection, I'd look into it, cable isn't that expensive and neither is a good ethernet card. You can get a good 200 ft. or more of cable cheap.

Your last few problems really sound like network issues with your wireless. Even if I do run it fine on mine, it's not uncommon for network issues with wireless to not work so well. Have you tried your internet wired?

As for your Sound Card issue, have you tried the 'latest' sound drivers for your card? Use this link;

Issue number 1 -- since you using a Sound Blaster, there is a KNOWN problem with DirectSound and SoundBlaster Cards, mostly Audigy 1 and 2, but the x-fi have also been known now to have this issue..

its something to do with PCI Latency timer, and DirectX working with EAX and CMSS, this is another reason why they should put an option to disable EAX...

its a known issue, try changing which PCI slot your sound card is in, it maybe a resource share issue, also, if your confident enough, go into your bios, and raise your pci latency slightly, this should fix it.
