Sometimes they'll give something that's official which isn't important enough for the press release. Also, the reason you see so much stuff like that in the forums is because the buck was passed to the fansites. There is no 'Official ANet Forum', just a link to preferred forums at fansites. Its a way to offload the support forum costs onto other people without committing yourself to them. That said, this is probably the best place for questions and discussions like that. ANet reps are posting official and non-official tid-bits all the time. It's part of the price of being a preferred fansite listed on GW's website.

EDIT: best place meaning this website's forums. another forum might be better off (or even a new forum such as questions to arenanet - Q&A I think is player-driven)..

I think anyone who buys Vista right away is a moron. No offense, but people seem to forget how rough and unstable the first releases of XP were... You're better off waitnig abotu 6 months until they get a good stable version of it.

Actually XP was as stable for me upon launch as it is today.

What I do remember is a lot of elitist dorks who said statements like, "Windows 2000 is perfect and stable, I see no reason to upgrade." Or "I'll move from Windows 2000 when they force me to."

Same tune now, and the result will be the same: Vista will be perfectly fine to use at launch, they will stay on XP for a while until they give into peer pressure and switch and then they will spam forums with some line in an attempt to rewrite history about how unstable Vista was at launch, and anyone who adopted it before them was a total fool and anyone who adopts it after them is a dinosaur.

I'd bet all my GW gold (and real money to boot) that Anet is busy testing GW builds with Vista Beta as we speak. Most, if not all, software companies are testing their products on Vista. It's the future Windows. There's no way around it. While Anet hasn't given "official word," I have no doubt it'll run on Vista. Also, look at the review someone kindly posted. It lists many games, including GW, that already run on Vista. If you don't want to bother looking, GW passed with flying colors.

Who cares if Vista will run GW? Vista doesn't exist. Probably never will, either

Vista is what they are calling it now? Wonder what the price tag this new cow patty will be. And if it will have a major security flaw like XP did when it first came out and six months later and MS didn’t bother telling the consumers about it.

lol, I know what you mean, one of the people I worked for would find all sorts of things on the internet, like a keylogger stuck into someones brand new Dell Laptop, or how Microsoft released a statement that their new windows will run like a Mac's old OS (can't remember the name, like Tiger or something)

Well if you have a legal copy of Windows you get the security updates.

As they should. Most of the games which do not work with Vista don't work because of their moronic copy-protection crap - e.g. you can kiss all games protected with Starforce prior to version 3 goodbye if you go to Vista.

Guildwars isn't copy-protected.

It would be suicidal for them to not have been testing for Vista compatibility as a major software developer. Microsoft has repeatedly said that they will discontinue mainstream support for Windows XP one year after Vista is released. They were recently nice enough to extend that to two years after Vista. When Microsoft discontinues mainstream support for a Windows version, companies have usually stopped bothering to make their software work with it since they have long since focused their compatibility and development on newer versions of Windows by then. I see no reason why ANet would be any different, especially since most users buy OEM computers (Dell, Gateway, HP) and OEMs stop offering older versions of Windows relatively quickly after a new Windows is released. Does ANet want to screw every potential customer who buys a new computer after Vista comes out? I doubt it.

Summary: unless someone at ANet is intentionally trying to kill Guild Wars, Guild Wars should work on Vista when it comes out. You should worry more about bugs in Vista since every new operating system has unforseen bugs when it is released at retail. Grab Vista 3-6 months after it is released if you can, you should be able to avoid a lot of problems that way.

Just incase anyone actually wants to test it, microsoft has now released the public version of Beta 2. You can download it from the following link.

http://download.windowsvista.com/pre...6/download.htm

And for any who are 'concerned' that it's not a microsoft.com site, domain registry lookup tells me Microsoft owns windowsvista.com so it's about as safe as any beta software can be (unless it's from google where damn near everything is beta )

It should be fine

Other forums users have mentioned it runs fine and read a article on game "testing" on Windows Vista and GW was one of them.

Guild Wars
Guild Wars, the sort-of massively multiplayer game with no monthly fee from NCSoft, appears to run wonderfully under Vista. All the game functions work fine, the background auto-downloading of game content zips along at a healthy pace (at least as fast as it does under XP), performance seems snappy, it runs in a window, you name it. In fact, all that's left is for it to show up in the Games Explorer, which it currently does not. Continued...
So a feature they could add it to make it show up in the Vista's new "Games Explorer" function (which also ties in to the parental Ratings lock control system).

Mac and Linux...but ArenaNet just doesn't care for anything but the majority.

Guild Wars has been out for a little over 10 months now, and at the time of release, there was talk about possibly making the game compatible with Mac's and/or Linux based computers. Is that project still in the works, or has that been scratched?

We won’t scratch the idea from our list, but there are no immediate plans to release on additional operating systems or platforms. At the current time, PCs and Windows are where we want to be. In part this is focus, and in part it’s utilizing the system and OS that has been chosen by an overwhelming percentage of players.
While I'm on this random tangent, here's something that makes me both angry and sad.

Hmm. How hard? I've been thinking of switching my 2nd boot from Fedora Core to Ubuntu Drake. If it's not too crazy I would love to get GW to run in Linux.

Aww. I didn't see the picture at first. That's just lame. I was so stoked to imagine the possiblity. Bah.

Be prepared to pay a monthly fee for Cedega. Reviews of performance range from "yucky" and "iffy" to "good."

Or, you could use the free versions...which don't really work, as you can see.

I was running XP (thanks to MSDN) before it was officially released and it was never unstable. 99.9% of stability issues come from drivers, 100% of drivers that cause instability where not certified.
The only time I had an actual BSOD on XP occured when I installed one of the 'beta' NvIdea drivers.

Run any OS with uncertified drivers and you run the risk of instability and system crashes, the second leading cause is poorly coded 3rd party software.

As for GW not supporting other OS'es, since GW uses DX 9 it would require a large scale effort from Anet to support OS X and Linux, considering the marketshare of those particular OS' I highly, highly doubt this would be worth the investment other then from an ideological standpoint. It certainly does not make financial sense.
