Default Windows Vista Beta 2 (32bit) & GW Experince

I wanted to share my GW experince with Windows Vista Beta 2 x86 (32bit).

Athlon 64 3400+ (Older 754 pin chipest)
On Via Motherboard (older) K8T800 Chipset
1gb DDR Memory (Single Channel)
eVGA Nvidia Geforce FX 5700 Ultra (128mb)
Creative Labs Audigy 2 ZS Sound Card
SATA Hard Drive @ 1.5 gb xfer rate (16mb cache)

I installed Windows Vista Beta 2 (Public release), beta sound card drivers and beta nvidia drivers. Installed GuildWars.

Result = Very playable. It was almost as fast as in Windows XP with some slight studdering that I could barely notice. And with refined versions Vistia to boost speed and more mature drivers. I can see GW running just as well on Vista Beta 2. This is on my out of date old hardware to boot.

I noticed that HalfLife 2 ran a bit slower then on XP but it was still playble.

Now...

Games that "barely" run on my computer, such as FEAR I doubt will run in a playable state in Vistia .

GW is Very playable on vista. But i do suggest that instead of 512 ram, You should have 1 gig of ram. 256 users will find the game unplayable or VERY slow. It already is bad enough with xp

So after downloading the Vista .iso file, and burning it to a CD, I create a new petition on my HD and install it on that, then I can dual boot and select either one at startup?

Yes, should be automaticlly updated for the duel boot after the install. If you are going to create a new partition on the same hard drive as the one i assume winxp is on be sure to backup your computer.

Runs great on my setup
Vista 5456
Amd x2 4400
3 Gig Duel
Nvida 7800 GTX 512
MSI K8N Diamond Plus SLI X16

I had a bit of a problem with vista, i run at 1680x1050 res. and full screen the screen would get all garbled with lines and shit going everywhere. I had to run in windowed mode to get it to look right. I didnt really try that much only messed with driver settings and resolution but Im sure theres a permanent fix.

Sounds like a driver issue, try a different resolution. The nvidia drivers are buggy if you have that brand.

Since the ISO is 2.xGB, you may want to burn it to a DVD.

I played Gw with Vista beta and it was bit sluggish...my pcs old. But it looked much nicer, brighter colors being a big thing. Over all I liked it, and if I had a better comp would kept it on here.

2GB of ram would ensure smooth operation on vista.

I ran GW on 64bit version of Vista Beta 2 and the performance was significantly slower that with 32bit XP.
I do belive that it will be faster than XP, but it will require a lot of time to optimize all the drivers to the level of current 32bit XP drivers.
Also, there seamed to be some kind of a bug between vga drivers, Vista and GW that made my system lockup when I was minimizing and maximizing GW (and I do that a lot all the time in XP).

My system is:
Sempron 2800+ @ 2.4GHz
2GB RAM
7800GT 256mb

I didn`t really expect much in terms of performance since Vista is still very much beta and far from release date.
Pretty looking though and with some interesting options no previously available in windows (specially network related)

There is always some kind of bug with windows Wait for SP1-6 before upgrading and most of the bugs should be worked out.

I personally do not want to touch the thing until a service pack is out. MS uses users to test their operating systems and I would like a fully working system (unless it is free).

Software has to have the worst track record for quality assurance. The user licence agreement binds you to what ever the company sees fit. Just like guildwars, you do not own the account you play on and they can revoke it at any time.

Vista Beta2 is FREE

I'm running Vista without any problems, but you need a top of the line Computer, it's a resourse hungry OS

"A beta version or beta release usually represents the first version of a computer program that implements all features in the initial software requirements specification. It is likely to be unstable but useful for internal demonstrations and previews to select customers, but not yet ready for release. Some developers refer to this stage as a preview, as a technical preview (TP) or as an early access."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Development_stage#Beta

Beta is free. The finish Operating system will not be. How much have you ran the beta and what have you tested on it?

I am cynical when it comes to new tech. Just like Conroe there are bugs and problems that I would rather not deal with.

Since it is my job to solve various computer problems, I like to try every OS (and hardware as well) before it gets massively used so I can get ahead of potential problems/bugs and know how to deal with them should I encouter them later.

Beta testing a comercial product is a bit tricky since you do a Quality Assurance for free and they make money on it later, but still, I like trying out new things
