Default My Guild Wars .dat file and your Guild Wars .dat file!

I was wondering after a long conversation with someone today, does my Guild Wars data file have useless files in it? I have been playing Guild Wars well... a lot. For 9 months now. I have spent hours upon hours playing, through many updates and builds. Suddenly I get a whisper from a friend of mine saying.

'I just installed Guild Wars on my new laptop and it only took up 930mb'

So I open up my file to look at how big mine is, I get a shock. There my friend was standing infront of me in game at 1.5gigs after mapping to every district and town he could as well as entering every mission he could find, I tagged along his journey as I told him that would be why it is so small... yet still he ended up on 1.5 gigs. where as mine...

*takes a big breath* is a HUGE 2.297 gigs

(and I have not moved out of my Guild Hall since the pvp event)

So I was wondering, how big is everyones Guild Wars .dat file?

(It should be in your guild Wars main file in programe files)

I only have a 40 gigabyte hard drive so 500 mb is a lot to me, Guild Wars is my only game. So is it possible that guild Wars has given me files that are never to be used? Junk?

What is the size of all of your Data files?! I am really interested to see everyones answer!

Mine is: 2,297,535kb

2.60 GB (2,802,568,704 bytes)

The dat.file contains all the map's of places you have been, to speed up zonig, so the more places you visit the bigger your dat.file gets, and then it contains info on your chars's(so 6 chars have bigger dat than 4)
Each up date will replace a specific map, thats why you might have a lag zoning after updating. And the factions only dat.file would be a lot smaller.
And yes it has files for ALL places that is avalable, so some files you might never use unless you go there( PvE only ppl still have all the PvP maps etc.etc), plus info on chars that you might have deleted. If it get's to big, delet the dat.file and download a clen copy, it will take longer to enter zones but will save space.

I have been everywhere in the game, infact not long ago I went everywhere again! hehe It was fun, the new hunting greens and running around ascalon ohhh it is fun to be with friends! but still I find I have a larger file than some and a smaller file than others. Those who have been aroudn since the start have the biggest files, so... does that mean the guild Wars carries useless files in the .dat? *is confused* well I do not know, but I still think it is interesting to see all the different file sizes. Oh by the way someone in my guild has a file 18kb bigger than mine!

Just under 2Gig, but there's a lot of Cantan area's that I haven't been to yet (and I didn't install it from CD's)

I don't think it is supposed/allowed to go over 2 Gigs. The (minimum) requirements lists Windows 98 and, as far as I know, that OS will not support files > 2 Gig. It also only requires 2 Gig, according to those lists.

So, ANet has a problem, or could have one, in theory, not that anyone still uses Windows 98.

lol I used to play FFXI, and I agree. That was insane installing it aswell it would be like leaving your computer for hours while it downloaded 11 gigabytes to your computer or w/e.

I think gw will aswell be very large after a few expansions but Im not sure if in the end it will match up to some other MMOs also putting expansions out.

It recuires 2 Gig as a stand alone game, but as you add on chapters your dat.file will grow over that. GW P recuired 2 Gig. and Factions Recuires 2 Gig if you install them as seperat games.

Mine's 2.50 GB (2,688,277,504 bytes). The sizes vary depending on how much is compressed/decompressed within the dat file.
