As brainless as this sounds, see if reinstalling Guild Wars helps at all.

Exact thing happens to me, except sometimes the repair fails and the game attempts to download Gw.dat again. Has that ever happened to you ?

I've seen this problem pop up in this forum as well as the GWonline forum fairly frequently. Has anyone been able to pinpoint the issue behind it ?

I had (and still do from time to time) that issue on my toshiba laptop. It started happening after a defrag, but i think I've pinned it down to some wierd hard drive issue.

Basically, every update i recieved caused a repair. Tried reinstalling (from the factions cd) and it helped, but didn't eliminate it totally. Now, it's fairly random when it happens, but as far as i can tell the hard drive is functioning normally. I'm not sure how GW *knows* to re-build/repair the dat. I haven't tried support, since i got it down to every once in awhile. Sounds like a support ticket issue!

Some things to try:

-Goto the system properties (right click my computer or go through control panels--system) Under the advanced tab, go to performance settings button, then to another advanced tab again to where it say's virtual memory and click change. Set the page file size to no page file then click the set button. On closing of the windows it will ask to restart, say no or restart later.

-Setup a diag/repair on the system drive (+ one with gw on it if different) under tools tab in the hard drive properties window (right click the drive - properties). Reboot the system... On reboot it will run a chkdisk and repair any bad blocks or missing dir info.

-Run a defrag under the same hard drive properties window you set up the diagnostics previously. This will give you a full defrag minus your page file (virtual memory) and any open system files that cannot be moved.

-Go back and reset your page file to 1024 initial size and 3072 max.

This is typical support information as also found here:

http://support.plaync.com/cgi-bin/plaync.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=2744&p_created=1121371074&p_si d=k_Hqe9ei&p_accessibility=0&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoP TEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MzQ mcF9wcm9kcz00OCZwX2NhdHM9ICZwX3B2PTEuNDgmcF9jdj0mc F9wYWdlPTEmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD1wYWdlIGZpbGU*&p_li=& p_topview=1

Plus the diagnostics for hard drive errors. Alternatively, if you have norton utilities (2004-2006 versions) you can use that defrag utility for a slightly more thorough defrag. You should always run a diag before defrag though.

You have a hardware issue. Check if you're mixing up 2 different brands of memory on your system. You've always had this problem or it started at some point?

Yeah, this can be a frustratring issue to resolve and usually seems to be hardware related. I had the same issue while using very good RAM in my system but once I traded a friend for something equally as good but made by a different company the repairs stopped and it hasn't had to repair in months. In my case I dont think the memory was bad since it passed memtest in my current system and works in my friends system flawlessly but my belief is my mobo just didnt like it much while using it while being stressed.
