Exclamation Guild Wars keeps either freezing my computer or making the screen black

When it freezes, nothing responds and i have to shut down my computer. This happens much less frequently than the screen just turning black, the monitor's green light goes orange and the computer still sounds on. It wont respond and i have to shut down the computer in this situation as well. And when i say shut down, i mean turn off the power strip and turn it back on as well as the computer. Any help woul dbe appreciated and the situation seems to be happening with less and less gameplay time each time it happens!

Sounds like your computer is overheating. Is it a desktop or laptop? Try blowing a fan on it.

What graphics card do you have? Do you have the lastest drivers? When you reboot, is there any error msg's? If you use the search button and type in black screen, it has a number of threads that may help, to start with.

My videocard is an nVidia GeForce 5500FX OC 256vram and i wasnt sure if this was a repeated topic but it seems quite urgent to me. I have tried blowing a fan on the computer and it makes gameplay longer, but eventually it happens regardless

Ok, well, i know what you mean about it being urgent, if there are no other error msg's ie within Event Viewer, no problems showing up in Device Manager, i'd agree with Mystra, its a a heat problem, have a look at the fans on your graphics card make sure they are not caked up with dust etc, if they are clean them out,try moving the card to another slot if you have one, for better air circulation, and keep a fan blowing on your rig. I can't help any further matey, good luck.

Thanks for all of that, and i will clean off any dust i find. It's an AGP card and i only have one slot so i cant move it. Do you suggest removing my second cd drive or my hard drive that im not using at the moment for better circulation?

i've had the exact same problem, and i've assumed it was a heat problem as well, but with an open case a huge fan blowing across and the room at normal room temperature, the issue still occured. i've got a radeon x800 pro, and i've found that this issue has happened to someone who's played world of warcraft. They were instructed to allow openGL in the game, and since that user didn't respond to the proposed solution, i'm assuming it worked. However, i know of no way to manipulate opengl in guild wars, and i'm working with an ati technician to diagnose the problem.

My advice is to attempt to cool down the computer and see how long it runs as compared to its normal environment. if there's an obvious difference, then congratulations, but if there isn't, i suggest you talk to the tech support for your video card manufacturer
