My question is simple, is there a way to buy an additional account, say for a friend who plays on my computer? Or can you only get them through buying the game? Thanks in advance.

No there is no other way, you have to buy another copy or access key at least.

plus the fact you cannot play at the same time either.

You can purchase the key-code online from PlayNC. You will have to follow the link and create a PlayNC Master Account in order to purchase the key-code online.
