Sounds like he overclocked the RAM in the first place? 0_o Never knew you could do that.

You certainly can. Pretty much all BIOSes have settings for RAM clockspeed, timings, latencies and such. Some BIOSes have those tuning menus hidden under a key combination, some allow more configuration, some less.
