Angry Login Freeze-Up !!!

So... I know what i changed, i know methods of finding and eliminating this problem, and i am STILL up the creek with no paddle!

Ok, so i have always been able to play GW without ANY problems WHATsoEVER.... EVER!!

I have never experienced any system errors or conflicts when it came to GW. And this weekend, i may have made a HORRIBLE decision. Saturday i got to play a bit of the double fame event and i knew i couldn't play much more that weekend as i had work later that day, and all day Sunday. I noticed that map loadups seemed to be getting a little sluggish as of late so i decided to use the executable switcher "-image" which is supposed to take all compressed files connected to ur .dat file and decompress them. This in essence is supposed to help your PC load-times for maps/zones to increase in speed. After the process completed and all files had been decompressed, i left for work. It has been about 36 hours since then, and tonight a few hours ago i tried to log in. The game starts up, i am brought to the Login screen, and i enter my password (remember my account option checked). As soon as i press enter, BAM!!! The game freezes. Out of 10 Login attempts and freezes 7 times my whole PC froze and i couldn't Cntrol Alt Del out of GW. WTF?!? Right away i think OH crap, the decompressions screwed my PC up. Possible file corruptions?

At this point i Cntrl Alt Del, and close the program. I try and restart GW, it starts up, i try to login, SAME story! Ok, so i try to reboot. PC reboots, i try to login to GW... AGAIN!! it freezes. So i check my tracks, YES "-image" was no longer switching off the *.exe file, normal ram usage was being allocated as GW sat at the Login screen....

So then i try the "-repair" switcher only to find it simply gives you the option to reinstall the game. How useless, a third way to reinstall the game... So i think what the hay, ill just reinstall. It is now reinstalled, meaning of course i have 100k files to DL but at this point i realize i HAD NOT tried something before reinstall. A different login!! I have an account i never use, so i whip that one out, i start GW after reinstall, login under my old account, and enter password....

IT WORKED! I can login under my old account. Super. So since this is now AFTER reinstall, i think mebe it was working simply because of the reinstall. So i log off, and enter my active account info and password. Enter.... BAM freezes again!!!! New GW install, base files only of the CD's.

So by the process i took, it would seem it boils down to the ACCOUNT is producing errors somehow?!?!? But how could a certain account make the whole game to freeze, and in most of those instances, my WHOLE PC to freeze? HOW THE CRAP am i even supposed to troubleshoot that!?!? Yes, i have already submitted a support ticket to Anet.... But then again, i have like 4 unresolved tickets. yuck!!!

Well, my last hope resides after i redownload all the files. Im using "-image" again because it takes WAY too long to DL files in game, and at this point i am like 99% sure that that was not why i had the initial errors. If that doesn't work, then im fresh outta ideas. Has ANYONE else experienced this? I mean, i can't even fathom how server side info related to account logging would cause my WHOLE PC to crash. At most wouldnt it just keep me from logging? Err58 or something...

Does ANYONE have any ideas? I think im too fustrated to think clearly atm..
Sorry for so much text, its kind of a stress reliever for me....

LOL!!!
Maybe try READING the thread first!?!?! I said IN the thread that i had already submitted a support ticket. People like you annoy me... greatly.

The point of the thread was to try and get further insight or ideas. Even though no one responded or bothered to read ill update this, in hopes that this can help some1 somehow...

Anyway, to those who care and may find this post useful, i have somehow corrected the problem myself. I completely reinstalled the game to a completely new location on my harddrive, and then used the "-image" switcher again to download all those files my gw.dat file would need (70k++). After which i logged in without any trouble. I dont know if anet did anything cause they never responded, so maybe i somehow had corrupt files related to my login information... which still doesnt make sense to me.

(Mods can close this thread if you want)
thanks and cheers!

I've hit a similar problem last night.

My gaming sometimes get to a point of choppy animation before the entire computer freeze up, leaving the power button the only option. I know it isn't a network/internet issue as that normally just kick me out of GW with a message and I can log in again. After completing Factions, I took the opportunity to do some maintenance on my machine. It did have Windows 2000 (SP4) which was an upgrade from Windows 98. Yesterday, after work, I formatted my hard drive and installed Windows 2000 (SP4) fresh. After hours of installing necessary things (e.g. service packs, firewall, anti-virus, etc), I installed GW using the link from their main site. Once done, I logged in and selected a character. My warrior was left in Fort Aspenwood, and so I had to wait for 9k files to download. Once done, my character appeared in the familiar surrounding but I had no control...my machine had frozen, no keyboard or mouse movement. Rebooted the machine, after all services had started, I launched GW and before I got a chance to enter my login it froze again. This happened 10+ times at the login screen. I know it's not an account problem as I can log in okay on another machine.

I've tried:

1. using the graphics drivers that came with my card (PNY GeForce FX 5500 128 bit).
2. using graphics drivers that was a couple of weeks old from the Nvidia site.
3. using the very latest graphics drivers from the Nvidia site.
4. Removing and reinstalling GW again, using the CD.
5. Reinstalling Direct X 9.

Finally, it was suggested that Anti-Aliasing (sp?) to be switched off. Once done, I launched GW and left it sitting on the login screen. Previously it would freeze up in a matter of seconds, but this time it was okay for 10 mins. I logged in and all was well. I left myself in Fort Aspenwood for several mins and then ran about in the outpost doing emotes and all was still well. Mapped to K. Center which needed 2K files to be downloaded so I went afk for 20 mins. When I returned, the chat was scrolling up with the normal messages, other people running around...I thought great, switching AA off had worked. I decided to run about the town, from henchies to storage, my machine froze....Aaargh!!!

Computer freezing once in every 3 or so days used to pee me off, but now I've seem to have made things alot worse. The hardware is still the same as before, and now I only have the Operating System, drivers, network, protection software and GW installed - nothing else that may cause a conflict.

I think I'll give installing GW into another directory a shot and see if that would work for me...otherwise I'll have to go cold turkey.

/sigh

hum... i'm having the same problems.

my only work around is running GW in a window (before it crashes) for a half and hour and maximize the window then.

have AA off at the moment so it might be that also.
