Default Suggestions needed

Hi all,

I am in desperate need of some help with Guild Wars, firstly CannonFodder please do not close this thread, I need some suggestions to help me out. Also I am sorry if the post seem long too.

Just so you are aware, I have been playing Guildwars on my computer since I brought it 2 months ago and never had a problem til now.

Ok, as we all know most people had problems after the update on Wednesday, well I am still having problems. Here goes, I downloaded the update and when I logged on i get about 3 - 5 minutes play, then I can't talk to anyone or do anything apart from run around. After about 3 mins I get booted and err 7. Once I evened was I was able to run to droks with no spawns with my monk However as I got to the gates I got err 7. Every time I log back on I get the same problem max of 5 mins play then the boot.

So Thursday I downloaded Contig and defraged the GW.dat file, it had 1686 fragments and I reduced it to 2. That didn't solve the problem. Thusday evening I decided to defrag my 100GB hard drive overnight, didn't finish til late Friday evening, again didn't solve the problem.

Saturday, I decided to uninstall GW, I downloaded the GW client from www. guildwars.com and downloaded all the updates, this took til late saturday evening as I waited for the lighting bolt to go. Once again no joy. Saturday evening as a last resort I wiped my computer and restored to factory settings. This resulted me in losing some files, but hey what the heck .

So Sunday computer back at factory settings, I decided to install GW first and try out, Sunday evening once the 2GB fle had downloaded I tried again. Still the same old problem.

I have contacted support, and they havn't help much as yet, I'm waiting for another response from them, but in the mean time does anyone have any suggestions that might help? or does anyone know how to read the Diag file you get from GW when you put -diag? It means nothing to me.

Thanks in advance

No your thread wont get closed, this doesnt seem to be connected to the current issues with the update. I can tell you have a problem, but what it is I won't know yet, it might be an idea to post your PC specs, and security software(antivirus/firewall).

There can be a whole host of reasons why this is happeneing, it could be a hardware issue(faulty ram) etc.

You seem tech savvy, and at least you have tried what you can first and I thank you for that.

Oh one more point does this happen with any other game you play?, does any other online game crash out?.

One final point, it could also be your internet failing/timing out, do you use a router, or are you connected via wireless.

Thanks for the response CannonFodder,

I am at work at the moment but I will forward the computer specs when I get back home.

Do you know of anyway I can test the ram?

Sadly I don't have any other online games to test to see if they time out too. I think I might have Warcraft 3 lying around somewhere so I will try that if I can find it.

I am on a wireless conection in a service apartment, but my internet works fine when I am surfing. Don't think it is that, could be though. Is there anyway to test my contection to the Anet servers?

Thanks again

Default computer specs

PC specs as follows,

ACER Aspire 3102WLMi
Mobile AMD Sempron(tm) 3200+ 1.60 Ghz
896MB of Ram (sounds a strange figure)
ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 (don't know if that is any good)
100GB Harddrive
Atheros AR5005G Wireless Network Adapter (with the lastest drivers)

My security software is Norton AntiVirus and Norton Firewall both up todate. I did disable these both to see if they caused the problem but that didn't help either.

Couldn't find Warcraft 3, but I will ask a couple of friends at work. I am sure one of them will have it, or an online game I can borrow.

So anyone know how I test my ram? as the specs were I should have 1GB of ram but 896m sounds strange to me.

Thanks

I doubt it's a RAM issue. Since your using wireless, could you try and plug you PC into the router direct and disabling the wireless card? I had similar issues with wireless, since it often runs as a "faux" connection durning dropped packets (within limits) as if it is still connected, it may even show that you are connected, but you have already lost some vital data at that point. Most of the time it's an issue with the router firmware directly and not the card drivers.

Edit: oh and the 896 is due to shared graphics memory of the express card. 1024 MB - 128MB (used for video).

I dont know if this will help Wolf , But this is what the aanet teck sent to me...Please try to start the game in the following fashion-

1. Click Start and then click Run

2. Click Browse and select your gw.exe program. It will be in "C:\Program Files\Guild Wars" by default.

3. The Run window should now read-

"C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe"

Modify the line in the run window to read

"C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe" -image

4. Press OK

Once the downloading is complete please start the game again as normal. Please let us know if the issue persists.

Regards,
Guild Wars Technical Support

my problem actuly solved itself before I did this , but there was a mini update I think.... Hope it helps.

Yup since I realised you are using a laptop, I very much doubt you have faulty memory, it could just be something as easy as an overheating issue, which is quite common with notebooks.

I'm voting for the wireless being the problem here, try to connect with a cable and see if that doesn't fix it.

Thanks for all the responses guys,

I did get a response from Anet and they think it is the wireless as well. Sadly as I am in a service apartment I can not get direct access to the router to test it.

I did try the -image thing and that didn't work either. By the sounds of it, it could be the wireless connection as I have noticed in the last couple of days a lot more secure wireless connections available in the block. So it could be that a lot of laptops are causing a drag on the router.

Well I managed to get 9 months of play without a problem. Good thing I go home next month, so I will be able to use my high spec computer when I get back. My brother tested my account and said it worked ok there.

Thanks again all.

*Gabrial Heart, thanks for the bit on the ram, I didn't realise it was shared and the 896 figure did confuse me.

*CannonFodder, since the matter is now concluded you can close thread if you need to.
