Default Vid Driver installation error

I've tried to replace my old vid card drivers with the ATI new ones.
I've unninstalled whatever was needed and tried to install the drivers I got from ATI's site, but when in the middle of an instalation I received this error:

"INF error
Video driver not found

Setup was unable to complete the operation.

Try to setup your display adapter with a standart VGA Driver before running setup."

well then i just took my vid cards driver CD and installed the default drivers.
Now what should I do,how do I install the new drivers?

Thanks in advance.

What video card do you have? What is the model/GPU on it?

You should not be having any problems that I can see. Normally, you just drop in the card, and let Windows install the default drivers. After that, simply download and install the newest Radeon driver pack.

Myself, I never use the drivers on the CD. Most of the time they are so outdated it is not even funny.

It sounds like the problem is windows doesn't realize it's evan an ati card so when the ati drivers looks to see what video card it is, it doesn't see an "Ati" card it see unknown. I think windows mis-id it.

Try manually telling it SVGA card, then it it detects "ati" card on next boot, then you can load the drivers. Bad memories from Ati Rage 128 / early Radeon days and this issue.

Or try removing it from the hardware control panel, then letting windows re-detect it.

Well how odd that I got the same error too. Yesterday, I booted up my pc and suddenly it just didn't recognise the video card even though the drivers were installed a month ago and had no issues at all prior to this.

Tried uninstalling and then upgrading to 6.10 and same error occurs, complaining about no suitable hardware for the drivers to install. So I used system restore to 6.9 but still no go.

Not sure what else to try. Fortunately I've another PC with Nvidia so I can still play GW.

I wonder if it's some kind of hardware problem with the ATI card. For it to suddenly stop being recognised is strange to say the least.

So from experience I can tell you this:
The message you got was from the install file and it did not recognize your video card to match its video driver.
Try installing an ATI desktop cataylst on a laptop and you'll see what I mean.
So you have these options:
1) Use windows update to grab a video driver that is compatible
2) Go to the ATI site and try different drivers, look at support forums
3) Use a custom ATI driver ex) omegadrivers.net
4) If you have a laptop use the video driver hack to force install the ATI catalyst onto your laptop.
