One of the things been suggested to improve the speed GW runs at is to reinstall the client. What I'd like to know is, does this involve deleting your gw.dat file too? or can I get away with saving a copy of this file, uninstalling, reinstalling, copying back the gw.dat file? Ive run a defrag on the file, so i reckon thats ok, just looking for other possibilities to improve loading times.

Im not 100% sure on this, but i think the point of reinstalling the client is to renew the gw.dat file. I dont think you can just save it and then put it back in later.

EatMoreCarbs is right the point of the reinstall is to get a new fresh dat file
with the -image command as i remember

Downloads and Decompresses all the compressed files in the gw.dat file. This will improve load time in new area's and get you up to date.

** During this process it will max out your computer (high cpu and memory usage) aka don't multi-tasks during this process **

Use this switch by itself, the game will exit / end as soon as it's done decompressing.

Usage: "C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe” -image

I would rename the current gw.dat file as to back it up. That way if the reinstall didn't work you can always revert back to it in a pinch.

Another thing that you could do before the reinstall is to remove all instances of Guild Wars on your computer. That means removing the main file that is made in your program folder also. That way the new install will be fresh with no corrupted data at all. Another way to find all instances of Guild Wars is go into Search and use that to find everything. I believe you can delete everything from there also. Just search all folders and files then input the words Guild Wars into the box. It will search your whole computer (depending on your settings) and list every instance of Guild Wars on it. Then just highlight every thing that is found then right click on them and choose delete. Only do this after using the main Add or Remove command from the control panel to keep from getting errors.
