Question What's up with REPAIRING DATA ARCHIVE?

For the 3rd or 4th time in the last week I got the dreaded "REPAIRING DATA ARCHIVE" when I started GW up. It takes it about 20-30 minutes to finish repairing. I ran it earlier today with no problems at all... I have only gotten this 2 or 3 times before this week in the entire time GW has been out.

Is it my computer? Is it GW?

Anyone have any ideas?

This happened on my husband too. Somehow, I doubt it is your computer, as all (or most?) character data is stored on Anet's computers. I wonder if it's a problem on their end. You're lucky you didn't lose one of your characters, like my husband did. It was very upsetting because he worked so hard on his assassin.

His GW account hasn't done any "repairs" lately though, so maybe it stops after a while. Anyhow I hope someone here knows what's up with this strange occurence.

One thing about repairing the data archive is usually a sign that something in the original data that was archived has changed, missing, deleted, corrupted, etc. Not that it means all of those things but definately that something has changed and doesn't match what was originally archived. If it's starting to cause problems, such as crashing or other things, I would think about a fresh install. Afterwards, possibly run a complete chkdsk on the drive, along with a defrag. A way you can do this is to open up the "My Computer" icon and right-click your hard drive, go to properties, click the tools tab, check now, and check the options in the window that pops up, then it will check upon restarting the computer. Afterwards you can run a defrag, which can be found the same way, or through accessories.

I had a thread on this last week, no one posted any solutions. Today I just loaded GW, no repair message! But now, I have an even worse problem. The game loads, my character bar shows up with no skills, just the arrows. No districts, I cant zone. No names appear in the party menu, and the game freezes and unfreezes 5 seconds apart.

I had it too... but after Guild Wars had an unrecoverable error (one that causes the program to quit and asks you to send a message to Anet). I've been getting a lot of those crashes after the release of NF. And after a repair I lose all my settings too.

I have repairing data archive all the time. I think it has something to do with the game crashing before, or some file in you folder getting corrupted. Right now, I have these Cubes running around, apparently I lost the necromancer skin, all necros are running around as a "light" box. Not to mention, countless merchants and NPC's do this running jumping sliding thing constantly, they dont stand still, or run normally like they are supposed to. One idea I had was to download a single file defragmenter, defrag it, and it might keep the problems away, any ideas?

I did the single file defragmenter, and my GW.dat wasn't even fragmented! The program didnt help me out at all

Thanks for all the suggestions. I run a Defrag regularly and my computer is not fragmented very much at all.

I am considering a fresh install. Maybe with the option to d/l all files. It happened to me again last night. Zoned from one area to another and got the Unrecoverable error box. Uuugh...

I've had this happen a few times as well. So far, it seems to be nothing more than an annoying graphics corrpution. The most common problem I've had is as people stated, the square white boxes of characters running around. It happened to me once so far in NF. In Kamadan part of the ground graphic got messed up and I had large flat white blocks. It took about 10 minutes to repair and I've been good since. Perhaps running the gw.exe defrag as suggested on earlier threads titled "got lag?" might help this issue. Not sure since I've never done it. I don't get a whole lot of lag. When I do, everyone else is as well.

Ive had the square white boxes for awhile, its only for the necros though, that leads me to believe something has happened and im missing the skin entirely. I need to try that single file defrag. As for the repairing data archive, it hasnt affected those white boxes yet.

ALSO
Anyone else ever run into a problem where NPC's run and jump constantly? Its kind of a foreward run, and then a hop. Cant fix that either.

Also, not sure if this may be what's causing all the repairing data archive messages, but I've never gotten one with it turned off.

My last "repairing the data archive" message was in July 2005 when I replaced faulty memory module.

Hardware failure is usually the reason for these messages. If you have overclocked your computer, put back the stock clocks and see if it helps.

Well I indefinitely got one of these this morning and it’s now loading in (first time). For me it might come from the weird fact, that I’ve got some weird error signs every now and then recently (error 007). So you guys are most likely right Defrag and I would say to check for viruses with your ant-virus programs just to be safe. I am crossing my figures and hoping that I don’t lose on of my characters, or I will be ticked off.

Well I guess, I have not lost any yet, thank the great beyond.

Default Again.....

Alright so I posted a message here before about this "Repairing Data Archive" and I got no help on it. Now it has happend again in the same month! Right now im loading my 5k files to get in the game and will be ready to load my, about 20k files just to get into one character. It seems as if people are having different issues with the repairing data archive, mine seems to be having to redownload every single file known to guildwars. Ive done viruses scans, defragmentation, the usual possibilites-- but nothing has fixed it. Got any solutions?

You're lucky, I'm having to repair the data archive several times a week and then next week only once or twice. Also, random NPC's in town, in quests/missions start about 3 strides back from their actual location, run 2 strides and jump to a halt, then slide back to the original spot and repeat, continuously. i have a video of it, it's pretty funny to watch the cut scenes and one of the NPC's like Togo or whatever might be doing that repeatedly while speaking

I had it once...after the game crashed. After than, all the NPCs are all weird..they keep playing their "spawn animation", like...jump out of the ground. I had to delete my old GW.dat and install a fresh copy to fix it.

Sounds more like a hardware problem in your case, I would try reinstalling all your device drivers, and maybe also run a memtest to check if your RAM isn't at fault. What are your system specs?
