Default Uh oh Nvidia!

Out of the blue I received a blue screen of death mentioning nv4_disp. I got this right after GW showed green wavy lines and froze.

Seeing this was a nvidia problem I removed my graphics drivers and installed nvidia's latest drivers.

Logged back on and started playing. Same result. I should mention the problem happened both times during a battle.

I just played some Call of Duty and had no problems.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I read many things about this problem, one solution would be to use a driver cleaner after removing the drivers, it's mentioned in another thread in Q&A or Tech's corner. There seems to be many solutions online other than that.

theres a memory leak in nvidias display service. has been for some time now.

its a useless service anyways. internal debugging program as ive been told.

start>run>services.msc

find "NVIDIA Display Driver Service">right click>stop and in the drop down menu, disable it.

if that doesnt help, then i dunno.

i run a 7800gtx laptop card and have had mine disabled for ages now with no problems.

I'm not a big tech guy so I've never heard of a driver cleaner. I removed my old drivers using add/remove programs and then downloaded v93.71 from nvidia's website.

The strange thing is I've never had this problem before. All of a sudden it happens each time I play.

Is there a driver cleaner you recommend? Thanks.

I like driver cleaner pro - http://www.drivercleaner.net/
(Go with the free version - paid only adds support for Windows 2003 / Vista)

<sigh>

Today I removed the video drivers using add/remove programs then ran the driver cleaner suggested above. I then reinstalled nvidia's latest driver.

I logged on to my prophecies necro and played through a mission with no problems. Once done I logged on to my factions ele and had problems within seconds. This is the character that was having problems before. This time everything on screen started changing colors. All people turned black. A staircase turned white. The ground turned purple.

Can I assume the problem is not with my pc that the problem lies with this ele or with factions?

Again I ask for your help. Thank you.

Unlikely. I assume you are having problems any time you play GW (with any character)?

It is almost certainly either a driver issue, or your video card is failing.

If it's fine in other games then it can't be his card. It would show up there too, especially in something like call of duty.

Goto START > RUN > TYPE DXDIAG and press ENTER. Wait a mo (say no to the pop up) and click on the DISPLAY (or DISPLAY 1) tab. Click on the TEST DIRECT3D button and let it do the business and answer the question when it asks. If you see any of the lines or wierd colours in those tests then it does sound like the card (GFX RAM maybe?). Do this a few times to make sure it's not just "on it's way" and you got lucky.

Try playing some other 3D games and see how they look. If all is clear, try removing GW and reinstalling it. All your account info is online so you'll lose nothing.

Funnily enough, my bro-inlaw had this problem last week, except all his chars had weird colours and artifacts. When he did the DXDIAG tests it showed up as fine except in DX9. Then on the 3rd try, it started to show in DX8, slowly getting worse. Eventually he decided to get a new cards and BOOM, he's good to go. Hope it's not your card tho.

Agree with Vandal2k6, If it's related to certain zones, maybe corruption in the gw.dat file.

Instead of removing / uninstalling. Go to c:\program files\guildwars\ folder and rename the gw.dat to gw.bac

Then either launch the game (and prepare for much downloading...) or do a "repair" install from the nightfall cd's (and let it update).

If issue goes away, it was the gw.dat file and you can delete that back up.

Before reading the latest posts on this thread, I decided to reinstall Factions. The problem seems to be fixed. After installation I went to the spot of the trouble with my ele and had no problems. I played a bit more with this character and everything was fine.

Thank you everyone for your help. Hopefully this solved the problem and it won't happen again.

<sigh again>

My problem is not fixed. I played with my ele doing several quests this afternoon and had no problems. Logged on a short while ago and did have problems. So I'm back to square one and have no idea what to do.

I had this same problem with a 6600GT a while back... turns out it was the card frying itself. If you have another vid card lying around, you might want to throw that in your machine to rule out the card itself being the problem.

Guess what? My vid card is a 6600GT. It just so happens I have another laying around. I will change cards and see what happens.

If this only happens after a while then it might be an overheating issue. If you can't pick up a new vid card, try getting a decent heatsink/fan for the vid card.
