Yea, AOL is VERY bad, pretty much worse than a virus. He deleted it, but then no internet worked at all. Havnt tried the firewall thing yet. Any other suggestions would be helpful.

I'd suggest using an internet browser other than AOL browser such as FireFox. Internet Explorer could work but I've heard there are some security issues with IE.

Very true. IE has a lot of securuity vulnerabilities. I myself use Opera because of the security and speed. Before he gets Opera or FF we need to get the internet working outside of AOL. He will not use IE after that.

Right heres what you need to do.

I had this problem before, and found out that AOL HAS TO BE RUNNING and YOU MUST BE SIGNED IN to get any internet connection.

The easier way is to get a router, which will give you a 24/7 connection without AOL running.

I hope this helps.

If it doesnt then maybe its your firewall settings?

AOL is running and signed in, has a router, and no firewall.

Why doesn't he just delete the bloated POS that is the AOL Browser from his system? You can safely delete it via the Add/Remove Programs applet and still connect to the web using the AOL dialer.

Once it's gone, just install Firefox 2.0 and all should be fine.

AOL is a browser and dialer rolled into one. Same as Compuserve. I've never heard of a version that has the dialer separate from the browser.

To the OP: Does your friend have AOL dialup or Highspeed? If he has dialup, you have to have the program installed in order to connect. If he is the one paying the bill, suggest switching to Earthlink, or something a little more friendly.

AOL is now free to everyone so you can grab there software and use it as a portal. It now runs on top any internet connection.

The only people that have to pay are the one's using them for there internet provider (dial-up).

Wait, so you're saying he can only connect to the Internet using AOL and not anything other? Wow, I haven't encountered a problem like this one. Can't help you out there. =\

That's simple then, delete AOL's POS browser, install FF2.0 and just connect to the web via the windows dialler with the relevant ComCast account info inputted into it.

ok, heres what to do.

1. go to connections in the control panel and set up a new connection
2. select, "connect to the internet"
3. select "set up manually"
4. select "connect using a boradband connection that requires a username and password"
5. enter any name as your boradband name it doesnt matter
6. enter your username and password (you need the @aol part of it)
7. thats it, remember to put a shortcut onto the desktop for easy access.
8. when you wanna sign out of it just right click the icon in the left hand corner and select disconnect.

ps this is what i use and it's alweays worked fine for me

whoa there. If he has Comcast broadband, there shouldn't be any need to dial into anything. If you can't get it working, just have him call the company. They should come out and fix it for free.
