Default Problems with Target Calling

OK, here's my problem, and here's what I've tried...hopefully SOMEONE out there knows how to fix it (and yes, I realize that the majority of people are not experiencing a problem). Please note that this ONLY happens on my desktop, not my laptop and only since the last update of GW. Also, my husband has had it happen sporadically on his machine/acct as well, although my problems on my desktop seem to be permanent. I also have no problem *following* called targets...just calling them myself. Also, my ctrl key works fine (as explained below), so it's not that it's a broken key. Anyway, here's what's happening:

Using 'ctrl' to call targets doesn't work. If I use 'ctrl' 'space' to call and attack, I (and my henchies/heroes) stand around doing nothing. Nothing happens... it doesn't even show up in the chat window as having been called. If I use just 'space' then everyone attacks as normal. If I use 'ctrl' 'space' to call following someone...nothing happens. Again, if I use just 'space', I follow fine. Using 'ctrl' in an outpost shows me the player names. Using 'ctrl' in an instance shows my the enemy labels. It just does NOT work in combination with any other key.

Things I've done:
1. reset all controls to default in the options menu (didn't help)
2.copied all files from my laptop to desktop (didn't help)
3. tried THREE different keyboards to rule out a hardware issue, both USB and PS2 varieties (didn't help)
4. uninstalled and did a fresh GW install (didn't help).

Any other input would be greatly appreciated. I'm getting tired of having to get out and boot my laptop every time I want to play GW when I have a perfectly fine desktop pc sitting there running.

BTW...running Windows XP if that makes a difference.
