How many of your programs actually use both processors? I know that not many games do.

If the OS recognizes it as a dual processor, then the games don't have a choice. The OS is the median between the processor and the programs.. no programs have direct access past the OS. And they have limited abilities in the OS.

you need an OS with dual CPU support and .. the software you are using has to support dual CPU otherwise it will onyl run off one .. there are few games that actualy support it .. in most situations having dual CPU is useless i would say 80% of the game out today dont support dual CPU .. you could try to run the processe on both cpus but as far as i know it wont work .. or atelast its not that easy .. .. a benificial use of dual cpu would be a server like an FTP server and otehr such servers games and whatnot ... also XP pro only supports dual Home doesnt and im pretty srue XP is what just about everyone uses these days .. i'm sorry.

To be more correct. You have a single core cpu running in Hyper Thread mode. It is making the OS think you have a dual core (or 2 cpu's).
But with HT most of your programs will indeed run faster.

The pentium D monicer dual core cpu's have just been released this past week. And have not even hit the shelves yet.

Actually, it's not necessary that a game (or any other app) be written specifically to use multiple CPUs so much as it is that they are programmed to be multi threaded. Any properly multi threaded app will see *some* benefit in a multi-processor, dual core, or hyperthreaded system. How much of a benefit you will see will depend on several factors which aren't really worth getting into here.

As a wild shot in the dark, however, one of the easiest way to do some simple multi threading in a gaming engine is to rip out all audio code and put it in its own thread. If you are using hardware accelerated audio it won't make a huge difference, but it would probably be measurable. Once dual core chips start becoming more common I would imagine you will start to see this optimization done on early "dual core aware" games and *maybe* even supported in older games with a patch. Later games will probably have better multi processor support in the engine, but I feel sorry for the programmers. Writing well optimized code for multiple processors is a PITA. . . Its not as bad as writing code for a distributed environment (like a beowulf cluster, etc) but I wouldn't want to be doing it.

As an addendum to my last post:

Interesting factoid I just remembered. An early example of a game with multi threading support is actually Quake III. If memory serves, you actually have to use a special command to enable it. Why on earth did John Carmack go to what was undoubtably a subtantial amount of trouble to include this feature (that probably virtually no one used)?

Because he is god. Maybe not THE god, but at least A god.

I am currently using:

Processor: AMD 3500XP 64bit
Memory: 1 Gig 400mhz Dual Channel DDR
Graphics: 2 Nvidia 6600GT PCI-Xpress SLI cards
MotherBoard: GigaBtye Nforce4 SLI
Few Hundred Gigs of HD Space

Decent setup and runs GW great, guess it'd be a lower budget High-end gaming rig. Would be nicer if I had a better monitor, my 19" Philips monitor is and has been crap since about day 1. (not much fun lugging a 50 lbs monitor around to lan parties).

Man, Im actually a huge fan of Q3, and since im planning to buy (in the next year as the prices drop down) an AMD 64 X2, could you tell me that command?

My system specs:

ABIT KV8-PRO MoBo (think Ill have to change this its Socket754)
AMD 64 3000+ cooled with TermalTake Silent Boost
1Gb ADATA Vitesta DDR500 (avoid, buy Corsair instead)
Radeon 9600 Pro (Oced @452-600)
80+250Gb HD Space
17" Samsung Syncmaster 173P
6.1 MoBo AC97 sound with SPDIF optical output
attached it to a Yamaha 6.1 Home Cinema 6x100W + 1x85W speakers
Logitech Optical Pilot wheel mouse (maybe the best quality/price mouse ever?)
ADSL 512/128 (1024/300 soon as Telefonica of Spain doubles the rate!)

and BTW, Carmack is *THE one and ONLY God*
