Good components wont prevent lag if your connection is the problem, which is what it sounds likeit is. Tell us what kind of connection you have, is it dial-up, cable, or what?

Did you try getting new video card drivers also sound card? It might be that.

Otherwise you can try: put all the GW graphics settings to low/minimum. If that fixes it, slowly move the graphic settings up one slider at a time to maximum until it starts to go slow again. Then you know which setting is the problem.

Did you also check your computer is not overheating? Sometimes if the Pentium CPU gets too hot it will slow down a lot to try to keep cool.

Do you mean that when you move, you go forward a little bit, then wind up back where you were, before starting to move again? If so, thats commonly know as "rubberbanding", and is caused by connection problems 99% of the time.

To find out about your P4, got to My Computer on your desktop, right click it, and then left click Properties. It gives some basic information about your computer, the Processor type and speed will be shown at the bottom.

If your video card has a plug like a hard drive does(same type), is it plugged in? That will slow it down alot, if its not plugged in. Also, check your video card and processors temperatures, make sure they ok.

Does that have anything to do with lag? Anyways, there are certain ways of turning down lag. (Assuming you have Windows XP (professional)
-DEFRAGMENT YOUR HARD DISK
-Clean your temporary internet files. There is this program CCleaner which helps alot, look around for it with Google, it's freeware. It also has an option to fix registry problems.
-Turn off all unneeded services. To do this, click start, run and type "msconfig". Click the tab "Sevices" and check the box for "Hide all Microsoft services" then click "deselect all". Then go to the Startup tab and unselect all programs there. If you want the computer still to startup with MSN Messenger or such, simply check it. Then reboot, a warning will show up at the next startup, check the box in it and press OK. If you want to do this more extensively, try this page: http://majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=12 (not for the not so daring)
-Disable prefetch. Click Start, click Run, type regedit. Navigate to
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE ~ SYSTEM ~ CurrentControlSet ~ Control ~ Session Manager ~ Memory Management ~ PrefetchParameters]. In the right side pane, look for the key named EnablePrefetcher. Right click it and select Modify. Set the value to 0 -Disable. Click OK and reboot.
-Use all your bandwidth. Windows by default reserves 20% of your bandwidth for QoS (Quality Of Service). You can take it back by doing the following.
Click Start, click Run, type gpedit.msc.This will open the Group Policy window. Expand the Administrative Templates section, expand the Network subsection, then click on the QOS Packet Scheduler. To the right you should now see the QOS settings. Double click on the one that reads Limit Reservable Bandwidth. Select the Enabled option and in the box type the number 0. Click OK and your done.
-Disable Indexing Service. The Indexing Service in Windows XP indexes your files presumably to shorten the time needed to search your hard drive if you are looking for a specific file using the Search feature. However, the constant indexing of files actually slows down system performance. Indexing searching performance benefits would only be noticeable on a file server not a home PC. To disable indexing: Double click on My Computer. Right click on the hard drive, select Properties. Uncheck the box next to Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching. Select Apply changes to subfolders and files. If any files cannot be updated select Ignore All. Wait (alot).
- Disable or reduce the disk space used by System Restore. The default amount it uses is dependant on your PC and is usually pretty big.If you are prone to crashes and plan to use it see A) below. If you realize it really doesn't do anything but restore the spyware you just got rid of and isn't worth the resources it consumes then see B) below.
A) To lower the amount of diskspace used by System Restore: Right click on My Computer, select Properties. Select the System Restore Tab. Highlight all of the drives listed and click Settings. Under Drive Space Usage adjust the slider to the desired amount, 5% would be fine.
B) To Disable System Restore: Right click on My Computer, select Properties. Select the System Restore Tab. Check the box next to Turn off System Restore On All Drives. Click OK and reboot.
-Ram Optimizers = Fraudware
-Get rid of spyware with AdAware, Spysweeper or something like that. Again, Google is your friend.
-Some virus scanners block Guild Wars with every update, be sure that it won't block it.
-Adjust for best performance. Its not that pretty anyway. Wallpapers, and graphical UI's (user interface also known as a shell) are costing you to loose even more needed resources. To adjust for best performance: Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Performance. On the Visual Effects tab, click Adjust for best performance, and then click OK.
-Forward your ports for Guild Wars: http://www.portforward.net/

Good luck

Yes your region most certainly plays a role in your ability to connect. Service providers utilize different routes to locations as well as pass data though several International translation and filtration devices. If you live in Europe but play in the US your transit time for a packet can be greatly affected by the distance and number of routes it must take in order to connect to the automatically selected Data center. Choke points can be found with a traceroute or by using the --diag switch when starting guildwars.

As a note by turning down I assume you mean reduce the amount of latency or packet loss that occurs. there is no way to "Turn down lag" only ways to minimize its affects. Even the localized optimizations will not eliminate the affects of latency and packet lose if the connection is the source of the issue.

Cable connections are also shared connections. In other words your CO will have a single pipe rented to multiple users. Overselling does occur and it will cause problems on your network. If the problem is found to be with your service provider you can attempt to have them rectify the situation. Not all Providers offer a speed or transfer rate guarantee however. If a trace route find that the problems occur outside of your Providers network there is little you can do beyond submitting a help ticket with Plaync in hopes that they can pester the culprit enough to rectify the problem.

I would also like to add that working within your System registry is not for the faint at heart. If you do not know what you are doing leave everything alone. All it takes is one botched up key and all hope is lost, restore disk here we come. Make sure that you make a backup of the entire registry tree before you even think about editing it. Your changes could very well cause problems of their own leaving you no choice but to restore the registry tree from a back up.

aeroclown thanks for pointing out some things. I was in a rush I guess (and english is not my first language).
I didn't know about the other country/connect thing, and thank you for explaining. On a sidenote, I wouldn't see what the use is in playing on a US server if you live in Europe, but that may just be me. (I did make a switch once, for selling things at a higher price on American Services ^^)
By saying turn down lag, I did mean minimizing, true, bit sloppy on that one.
At least all cable connection companies in our country (the Netherlands, wouldn't know about other countries) have a speed gaurentee.
System registry, yes, well, I have no problems using the adjustments which I excessively mentioned (the prefetch and reservable bandwith issue). Neither have people had problems which I advise and still advise to do so. The services adjusted in the link are in some point of views a bit tricky and maybe not helping for you, but it is also explained and told on that very same page. And myself have also said that these things are not for the not so daring ones. By the way, CCleaner which I mentioned that has this utility to repair registry problems, asks you to make backups before you actually adjust them. This program is used by many and also approved. It doesn't get rid of mal/ad/spy/whateverware that hugely, but is a nice way to Clean up the Crap, hence it's called CCleaner for CrapCleaner.

Anyways, if all this didn't work, then I'd suggest sending a support ticket, yes. But starting at your computer is halfway (if not the whole way) there.
By the way, please note that GW needs about 3-4 GB free (and not interrupted) space to run good. Also, what might work if you don't have a videocard supporting directx 9 or shaders, you can disable that by selecting properties of the Guild Wars shortcut and after the quotes add a space with the following: -dx8 -noshaders. -dx8 NEEDS to be in front, or else it won't work. Good luck.

Ok, I have a problem too...I have Guild Wars prophecies it works fine, aside from bits of lag here and there and some disconnections. I just got factions and when I tried installing it, it did. However, I could play it all the way up to Shing jea monastery, the moment I enter sunqua valley, i stay for like 3 seconds, and it disconnects me. I then see a screen saying a serious error has occurred, and that the problem is being tracked or w.e, but nothing seems to be getting fixed....

Then, I try to do it again, same thing happens about 10 more times. One time it said it was doing a data repair, but that didn't help at all. Then I tried re-installing both factions and prophecies. Prophecies worked fine, but factions wouldn't completely install. It like froze at 67% of downloading the files...then I pretty much gave up and just un-installed it all, and reinstalled prophecies only...

But it still showed me that I had my factions toon I created yesterday, with the 6 slots...I'm thinking that the cd was corrupt, because I seem to be the only one with this problem. I have Windows XP and what not. So, I was going to exchange this defected guild wars factions for a functionable one, and then use the new access key from the new factions I get to link it with my prophecies account.

So what would happen if I did this with the whole exchange and installing the new factions so it would link with my prophecies account?

So what would happen if I did install the new factions onto my computer to link it with my prophecies account, and what would happen to the old defected factions one?...

It could very well be that your client is corrupted, since that happened a while ago, around factions. There will happen nothing to your account when you uninstall Guild Wars. If you download the client from www.guildwars.com, it may solve your problem. Good luck.

I just installed Prophecies. I bought Factions, added the game key to my account and started up Guild Wars, It downloads the files you need after.
